There does come a point where people that don't have very much money to begin with have a hard time simply affording gas. It might sound made up, but it is the absolute truth. First the useless trips are cut out, then even more routine trips start being scaled back. Where I live, rural eastern Kentucky, even my best friend that I grew up with lives 30 miles away. With a minimum wage job here (as jobs are even more scarce than they usually are around this area minimum wage isn't considered too horrible) you have to work an hour or two each day of your 8 hour day simply just to pay for gas to commute to be able to go to work. It hurts, and it hurts people in that situation first and the hardest. I've said it before and I'll say it again, if the rise in gas prices from the past couple years becomes a solid trend, if another fuel alternative isn't found, people are gonna start riding a goddamned horse to work."Sexy" Steve Mijalis-Gilster, IVX

Your post that hasn't been refuted didn't SAY anything. make a point and I'll refute it if I disagree. I started this thread with a post that YOU have yet to refute in any way besides just assuming that it's wrong because the people in your CLASS know something. Wanna know why they do? because they're in SCHOOL. what percentage of voters are in school? Most people get their political knowledge from the commercials during Who's the Boss re-runs and what their friends tell them. Too many people don't do any research at all, which brings us back to the original point. pv is talking about a +/-3% margin of error being bad... ANY poll has a margin of error, but even assuming that it's at the high end, those numbers are still terrible.
And yes, gallup polls right now show Bush ahead... there's a good chance Bush will win this election, that doesn't mean that the people voting are informed at all, and it also doesn't mean that you're right in any way.
Yes, I started the name calling, but there were no party lines drawn, just me calling you an idiot because your post was idiotic and not even based a little bit on fact.

So anyways, in debate this is known as an impact turn. I'm not debating whether Republicans are ignorant, or whether Kerry should win, I'm saying we shouldn't even be here because this entire poll is way to sketchy. And even if you win the risk of this poll actually being accurate, well, thanks for telling us, we already know this. You're telling the wrong people. As for the "school" thing, I'm not sure what you're talking about but let's assume that you're talking about my "100% of my classmate Republicans know the truth about Bush, therefore your survey is flawed" argument. That was just an example. But nonetheless, at the point where this poll is flawed, further argumentation seems pointless.
And don't jump the gun - I've been perusing this site looking for some shred of evidence on their polling methods, which only turned up a link on how usefull polls were, which pretty much ended up concluding that "some polls are good and some polls are bad" while not telling me anything about AlterNet's polls. I tried to look up about the site, only to find that it is an "independant" (read: Anti-Bush) media site. I searched for "kerry" and all I got was things like "Bush is bad on civil rights, now KERRY has a plan" and "Bush failed, KERRY has experience to deal with threats." I even found an article that said Gallup was a bad poll, etc.
Oh, Sarien- keep posting the funny images. If you recall correctly I also advocate electing BZ. $Last edited by Jerome Scuggs; 10-25-2004, 06:14 PM.

Originally posted by JeromeThe best kind of satire is the kind that is both witty but still true. Please re-read it. Here, I'll even link you. And even still- you must be the only on who didn't see any meat on that first post, but the other 2 pages of people must've. Coming out of this post the only argumentation I have from you is "You don't know how polls are done, the Gallup polls have predicted the election correctly for the past 50 years". (Which, admittedly, was one of the arguments I was really strongly pushing.) First, that's a pretty defensive argument, and second, this isn't Gallup. Nice tactic, it might confuse the ignorant public by tying in a sketchy poll with a respected, informative poll, but I still have no warrants as to why this PIPA group is a respectable, accurate polling group. I searched their site, all I get is "900 people". And my opinion as with a few other people in this thread is: 900 people doesn't cut it. Someone even arguing against me conceded that a poll of 2000 people or better makes a sufficient poll.

I understand satire, but it's not really satire if there's no truth to most of it.
I never said statistiscs mean absolutely nothing.
I never condemned Bush before 911 happened. When we went into Iraq, I was hesitant, but hopeful that our president knew what he was doing, I have since concluded that he didn't (does that mean anything in the big picture? only one vote in a non-swing state, so probably not.. but I think I also got my parents on board, so that's 2 votes in michigan).
I thought the poll was an interesting commentary on american society. I wasn't really trying to connect PIPA to Gallup in that post, Gallup is just the polling organization that I'm most familiar with, and you were on the attack about how a small sample could represent the whole, I merely suggested that as a starting point in your research, if you cared enough to research how polls work. I'm the first to admit that I'm no statistician, but I think the number that someone pulled out of 2000 was straight out of their ass. I'm of the opinion that even if this poll was a "random" 900 people that work in factories in texas, and if its correlating percentages to the rest of the Bush supporting voters is meaningless, that's still too many damn people that don't know what's going on. However, just for the sake of argument, I will do more research into the company that did this poll when I have more time. I'm getting ready to leave work now.
And the other 2 pages of people that you think saw some 'meat' in your post? most of it was about electing me... I think they saw right past your supposed 'meat' and just thought that electing me seemed like a good idea.http://www.trenchwars.org/forums/showthread.php?t=15100 - Gallileo's racist thread
