Mars Volta was cool, but the better of the two bands that formed after At The Drive-In's dissolution is definitely Sparta. Their album "Porcelain" is amazing - full of the singing that drew me to ATDI, but with enough evolution to make them a very unique and downright amazing band.

I saw Sparta a long time ago, right when they first formed, and I thought they were pretty good, so I bought their EP, which was pretty good, and then I saw them again, when they played right before the release of their full-length, and they sucked, and the full-length sucked too. So I never bought their new album.

You realize this is a big (yet hilarious) contradiction...right? Rooney's album has 12 songs. 11 of them are love songs, then one is a song making fun of pop stars when Rooney is pretty poppy themselves. SO YOU SEE?!? For the record, I like Rooney despite their wussy ways.

It's more that Rooney sounds retro and actually has a melody. Maroon 5 is just "She wiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiill be loved...." and that's the whole song. I actually don't think of Rooney as poppy, though. I stuck it into my class CD player and my teacher goes "When did this come out? Early 70s?" I told her 2004 and she was like holy crap, who is this?
