  • Modern comedy

Saturday night/early Sunday morning I had the pleasure of watching "Richard Pryor Live in Concert", recorded in 1979. Pryor puts just about every single modern comedian to shame with his antics and wit. Except maybe Gallagher. You can't go wrong with a guy who smashes shit with a huge hammer. But in all seriousness it seems like modern comedy is just lacking something. Even the "popular" modern comics just seem to be taking Richard Pryor's approach and almost abusing it to the point that they're just not funny.

Any thoughts on this? Or am I the only one who even sees that the quality of entertainment has gone to shit?

I disagree. I agree that there are some great older comics, I just think that there are a few out there today that are also really funny. I'm a big fan of Sarah Silverman, and of course Bob Odenkirk and David Cross. Some of the Ali G/Borat stuff I've seen is pretty genius. Again, I guess it all depends on what you like, but I wouldn't dismiss some of the modern comics out there.
Music and medicine, I'm living in a place where they overlap.

CS, since you seem to know more than the average yutz about comedy, I'll look into those. Any more non-mainstream recommendations? I'm sick of hearing Chris Rock and just about every other "big-time" comedian spew the same unfunny crap over and over again.

I'm a big fan of doug stanhope's standup stuff, but as conc said it can largely be a matter of taste. http://www.comedyspeak.com has some samples of comedians who I find pretty funny.

Three tremendously different styles, three tremendously talented comedians. But if you like Gallagher.... :-/

Edit: all 3 of them have put out comedy albums definitely check them out. :-)

I'll be the first to admit that most of Gallagher's routine isn't that funny. When he brings out the Sledge-o-Matic, though.. you just can't fuck with a man who smashes food with a giant sledgehammer. Maybe I'm weird, but I like messy comedy.

I like the first two, haven't had a chance to see or hear the third. I'll look into him though. Thanks. I just have to get away from these mainstream fuckholes who aren't in the least bit funny.

Check out the guy who played il Duce in Saints - Billy Connolly, he's scotish and likes to talk alot about shitting and farting (from what's I've heard on my albums) but has some brilliant moments especially in the "airplanes field".

I've always liked Bernie Mac and other Kings, but it's all about taste, I dig Eddie Griffin's comedy and also Carlos Mencia, they're abusive and funny

Brian Reagan has some good stuff, and he doesn't swear in his stand-up's which was reason good enough for me to check him out (fucking freak)
Robert Schimmel, Richard Jeni, Lewis Black, David Cross, Sam Kinison (he's got THE BEST EVER version of Wild thing).
Carlin, early Robin Williams, Pryor, Izzard, I like one cd with Andy Dice and his abusing of audience

The best of them all is Bill Hicks, of course.
