what it there is a stop sign and a crossing on that hill? behind you is the farrari which stops 10 away from you since a jerk is driving it. you will roll backwards, no matter how fast you change from foot brake to gas and if you have a shitty low ps car and a slow foot (like old people) u might even roll 10cm. just because you lift the clutch until it bites while standing on the foot brake will not stop your car from running backwards after lifting the brake.

Technically, you shouldnt move without a little bit of accelerator power, so in the time it takes to take your foot to move from the break to accelerator (whilst other foot is on the clutch to stop the car from stalling) your car will roll down the camber. Hence, the handbreak halts the car until you have 'biting point', then you can release and instantly move away..

Have you ever driven a car? You can go around 5 mph on just the clutch, some cars even faster.

Thats exactly what the hill test is about, you have to be able, atleast here in the netherlands, to drive away WITHOUT moving backward using the footbrake and handbrake, meaning not at the same time. But you have to be able to drive away without moving backwards using footbrake AND you have to be able to drive away without moving backwards using the handbrake. And moving backwars means a fail. And man, thats the easiest thing there is, paralel parking is much harder then the hill test. So your wrong.

maybe thats possible at your wanabe netherland hills but is sure is impossible in the alps.

Well, if you are talking about really steep hills, SMARTEST things to do is use handbrake, but it's still doable with footbrake.

Besides, having the clutch halfway up while having the handbrakeon and pressing the accelerator will break the clutch quite nicely

With reverse you can easily drive without applying any gas.

I get it finally. Although, even on fairly steep hills (at stop lights, etc) I haven't had a problem holding the car with just clutching out. I see why the hand brake would be the "safest" way. I've heard of new drivers rolling all the way down a hill (backwards) and crashing because, for some reason, they couldn't handle getting in gear.
