It the biggest MMORPG online, it's called World of Warcrack now.
Tons of diversity between classes and races. Trade skills that are enjoyable and not punishing. Options between PvE and PvP.

The only con i can think of is.... it's extremely addicting.

If you want to have a real life then don't purchase this game. If you wish to not sleep, and skip work/school then purchase this game.

you can do quests on your own or in groups up to 5. you build up your characters armor, improving stats for many different categories making your character unique. you can also choose 2 professions for your character with 3 secondary skills to help your character make money, make armor, make weapons, or make other items... this choice also makes your character even more different from everyone else. when you join a large guild that has many high level characters, the game gets 2x as much fun. people help each other out frequently. also you can go on large raids to kill the opposing faction (horde/alliance).

If you want a game that drains your money, and is very addicting.. probably so much so that we won't see you for the next 3 months (I say this because it happened) then go for it, ha.

Alright, don't listen to them, I'll explain it to you.

You basically have 2 camps of MMORPGs right now: The World of Warcraft Camp and The Guild Wars Camp. And here's a quick comparison..

WoW - Pay per Month
GW - Non pay per, but you are encouraged to buy multiple expansion packs

WoW - Based on an already established world ... the World of Warcraft
GW - Some story about white mantle thingys and a lady named Dwanya

WoW - Made by what was left of Blizzard
GW - Made by the good people that left Blizzard, and the Diablo 2 Team

WoW - One continuous world of running from town to town for hours on quests by NPCs
GW - Multiple rooms or "districts" for each event. Move to areas by clicking on the map and warping there. Find new areas on foot. Easiest traveling system in any RPG, ever.

What it basically boils down to is...

WoW - Guild Co-Op play, in an already exquisitely developed world, by the people of Blizzard. A hands down, awesome MMORPG, but has downfalls in the fact that you are forced to pay per month to play .. BUT .. BUT BUT BUT (A BIG BUT) you don't need a credit card!

You see, you can purchase pre-paid cards that have a code on them that you put down, in place of a credit card. They cost like.. $35 (?) and last you for 3 months. Until your next crack fix.

GW - Its free to pay per month, definately a MMORPG for the gamer who isn't "hardcore". But, you can totally get into it for the PvP ladder like in Counter Strike, and therefore get hardcore into it. But its a game with a wide range of appeal and easy to get in to (Well... at least Amy Guano and I thought so >.>)

And I guess a side bonus would be getting into my guild ...? Umm... The story and cinematics are ... pretty bad. Could be worse ... but bad. But the gameplay is nicely done and the combat controls tightly. The lag is rarely, if ever an issue.

So you have 2 questions to ask yourself....

1. Am I gonna be "hardcore" when it comes to this game?
2. Will I want to pay per month or by pre-paid card for a game I already bought?

If you said yes to both of those, then WoW is up your alley. If not, I'd goto Guild wars.

one final side note: I know you can play WoW at your leisure, but when you know you're paying for all the time you're not playing as well, then you should really feel like you are wasting money on lost time with it. If you're gonna pay for something, at least get the most out of it, ya know?

I advise to stay away from MMORPGs (haven't played WoW). All they do is addict you to levels obscene enough to make subspace feel like a snack. But if you want to be an IRL zombie go for it man!!!
