i dont understand the whole pope thing, but then again i was raised entirely without religion and pretty much despise the religious right to the point where im cynical about anything related to religion whatsoever, so i probably shouldnt talk.

It all depends on your faith. The pope took power early on in the 3rd or 4th century by telling all the other cardinals at the time that he, the Roman cardinal, has power over everyone else. So, Rome just took the initiative early on.

The pope may give to charity, but look at where he lives. He doesn't have to worry about money for the rest of his life. Everything is just handed to him. And where do you think that money comes from? Thin air?
