that said, I believe what it's trying to say is that if you're gonna go around judging people, be prepared for them to judge you back. that's it.
"judge not" = "don't judge people"
"lest ye be judged" = "for fear that you will be judged yourself."

it's not saying don't judge them period. it's saying that if you do.. there are consequences that you'll need to accept.

seriously though, I don't think you should be living your life according to some old book. do what YOU think is right, not what other people TELL you is right.

in the examples you've given:
"Hey man, doing drugs are bad for you" - there is some truth in this (suppossed brain damage, danger of overdosing/mixing drugs, liver damage in the case of alcohol) as you'll always have some people who are irresponsible enough to kill themselves with drugs, therefore shouldn't do them in the first place, also there are others who get in large drug debts- which they'd rather not be in.
A bit of difficulty following things to the word: usually you judge someone in need of help, and then help them. Helping indescriminatly will largely be a waste of time.
some people will always resent being judged because they resent the truth. Ie people who won't accept charity, who won't believe they have a gambling/alcohol addiction, classic 'denial' cases.
In the end, it comes down to this: you can judge people, but it will bite you in the ass later on if you're not careful. Judgement needs to be refined, and generally it is better to err on the optimistic side if you want to avoid offending people. Hopefully your parents, teachers, friends, experiences will have taught you good judgement, without it you are socially screwed or at least misunderstood. ( i think that passage may mean: judge someone to be evil incarnate, and you similarly will be judged. Judge someone incorrectly, you too will be judged incorrectly. So do not judge, lest it come bite thine abdomen)
And I agree with what suxxor said: follow your heart.

Some people don't share your beliefs.

I know that sounds simple and obvious, but it needs to be applied in a lot of different ways. Some people don't think there's anything wrong with a little bit of drug experimentation. Some people don't want to stop smoking even though they know it's bad for them. Some people don't want to be saved by your lord jesus christ because they don't believe in him. Some people don't think it's a big deal to see a breast on tv.

There's a lot of people out there that WANT help, go help them. Why do so many people insist on helping people that don't want it or need it? Go build houses for that "housing for humanity" program or whatever its called, go work in a soup kitchen.

I'm sick of right-wing freaks focusing on stupid issues. Nobody ever got killed by hearing a bad word on the radio, nobody's ever died from smoking pot. Instead of spending endless time and money on these things, woudln't it make more sense to maybe give kids health care?

I know I went off course a little here, and I didn't mean to assign any beliefs to you that you didn't express, this is just how I've been feeling about religious-types lately.

Ok, uh back on topic. The way I've always interpreted Luke 6:37 is basically treat others as you would like to be treated. Like the examples people have already said, there's a difference in helping someone out and criticizing them.

yeah, on topic, i dont think its wrong to tell someone "i think you should stop smoking, and i will help you" but it would be pretty goddamn annoying and pretentious. you dont think your friend knows that a lot people consider drug use bad? you dont think he would ask for your help if he wanted it? "i think you should stop smoking pot" is overstepping your bounds, in my mind, because why is it your business what someone does?

on the other hand, if your friend's smoking pot does affect you, i dont think its wrong of you to tell him. for instance saying "you know, it sucks that i never get to hang out with you because you only want to smoke all the time." thats not judging what he does, but its telling him that his habit is negatively affecting your relationship.

i personally dont feel the bible enters the equation, if youre the kind of person that runs around telling people what they should and shouldnt do, youre a jackass whether god tells you you can do that or not.
