US: Why does everyone love raymond?

I was watching the latest simpsons episode, starring this raymond guy as most of you probably know and I was just wondering, why does everyone love raymond? I've only seen the programme like once and nothing jumped out at me....

P.S. I realise that it's just a program.

P.S.S. It reminds me of the simpsons episode where Bart joins a boy band and at the end Lt. Smash is about to blow up MAD building and the guy says 'how about....everybody hates Raymond?' lol

Apparently it's the most watched comedy sitcom, at least that's what the CBS network (or whatever network it's on) keeps telling us.

I think it just has a wide range of appeal. I don't watch it, but my grandma loves it, and she hardly likes anything on tv except things like iceskating and crap. It's safe, not edgy at all, but still relatively funny. So anyone can watch it

Rating-wise, reruns of Lawrence Welk (Saturday night PBS) consistently beat MTV and VH1 combined. This speaks to demographics (greying of the US population), not the quality of a program.

Many people believe the Neilsen ratings system is flawed, with the major charge being that minorities and people towards the lower end of the economic scale tend to be underrepresented.

Personally, I can't see why so many Americans (if you believe the ratings) enjoy such brainless, and unchallenging television shows. For the most part, I think the programming found on the major networks is the main reason why our society is so stupid. Network TV trains us to be consumers, to not think for ourselves, to be entertained by the mundane, and not pay attention to the information that is actually relevant to our daily lives.

For example, on the major news networks all last week was that story of that stupid lady who pretended to be kidnapped, but she was actually lying to get out of her wedding. During that same week, there was a string of car bombs in Iraq that was in response to unfavorable Iraqi political decisions. In a 1/2 hour period, the stupid "runaway bride" got 18 minutes of coverage. The Iraqi carbombings got 2 minutes. Awesome :noexpress

However, I heard somewhere that Brits have a much more lucrative tabloid news business than we do, so I know we're not the only idiots on this planet.

The only thing close to a sitcom featuring on an Italian family we had before Everybody Loves Raymond was Sopranos, so its original. It has its moments too.

People like it because the characters are extreme caricatures of how we see our family members. I wouldn't call the show "brainless" or even "safe" however. There's a very subtle psychological subtext to the show that strikes a chord with many viewers Each characters is driven by their own peculiar neurosis and though they are caricatures, people feel an afinity with them.

I never like Raymond...never did anything for me. However the Larry David Show called "Curb Your Enthusiasm" cracks me up.

I think its funny, I enjoy watching it with my wife, we also watch CSI togeather and I watch American Chopper.

my parents love the show. sometimes i watch it, but i tend to find it kind of repetitive. the mother always does something that annoys the wife, and she can't say to the mother's face that she's a stupid funknut.
