The best American sitcoms many others have mentioned here like Seinfeld, Arrested Development and Scrubs probably wouldn't be good choices for your report as arguably the most vital part of what makes them great is also what makes them atypical compared to other American sitcoms.

Friends, that seems to be one of the most popular of the modern era.

I still don't know how Growing Pains got away with having a recurring character with the nickname "Boner". Someone tell me how that got past S&P?

                        yeah, good point :/

this gives me an idea to make such a question as, "In what ways is Scrubs atypical to other more traditional American sitcoms such as Friends, and why is this so successful?"

but this still leaves me having to study Friends.

If you can, you might want to compare two sitcoms that present the same general concept. Scrubs for example deals with themes like relationships at work, while Friends is more about, well, friendships. You could say Scrubs is about friends too, but they're built from their working relationships. Something like Everybody Loves Raymond is about a family context, and is also directed more towards a different, older audience. If you're using the Office as a comparison to a family sitcom like Raymond then you have to be careful about whether the differences are a result of an American versus British style or whether it's because they deal with different themes and appeal to different demographics..

Hmm, you're right. It would be cool to compare MASH and Scrubs, and show how the representations of death have changed and why, and maybe soemthing else which has changed between the two. Any ideas?

I have to have one contemporary sitcom. As long as I focus on Scrubs then it should be ok.

i really think scrubs is misrepresentative of sitcoms here. its a decent show, but the way its shot is completely different, and theres no live audience. same goes for arrested development. if youre looking for a traditional american sitcom thats not completely terrible thats aired recently i suggest That 70's Show.
