Ok, in a year or so I'll be going uni (well, that's the plan anyway) and in the mean time I've decided to think about getting a laptop for working on, however the world of laptops is a new one to me. So, to the point I basically want to know would it be worth it, any good/bad experiences with a certain manufacturer or seller and any other odd bit of information you could throw my way. I appreciate it, thanks.

Your uni will most likely have a large amount of publically available computers (Pc's and mac's) for you to use, so only get a laptop if you want to waste your time playing games on it/take it into lectures to take notes on. I wouldn't reccomend taking notes on a laptop, though.

crimes, throughout our history
But not as great, as the one of late, affecting you and me
Once a nation proud and free, and now we’re weeping sorrow’s tears
Tragedy’s approaching, it’s worse than all your fears
Come on my countrymen
Come on and take a stand
Don’t let ‘em take away your land
the Wenger bus is coming
and all the kids are running
from London to Manchester

My sister has a nice Acer laptop, it was £700-800 (bought it about a year ago). It's pretty lightweight and has everything she needs; a semi decent sized HDD, decent amount of RAM, respectable processor (I would give numbers but I really can't remember).
She has had no problems with it yet.USS Banana after years of superior jav play has amassed 17999 kills, he is 1 kill away from 18k, Type ?go Javs FOR A GAME OF HUNT (no scorereset) -Kim

Pro Star makes a decent professional Laptop. I just purchased an HP ZD8000 and I have no problems with taking it with me back and forth to work.
Few things to look at are:
Battery life vs. power source availability
Weight
Size of course...was a pain in the ass to find a bag to lug the ZD8000 around in...but I found one!
Features needed...such as DVD-R/CDR burner, Ram, Screen type, multiple ports and connectors, S-Video TV out.
54g Integ. Broadcom 802.11b/g WLAN & Bluetooth card is also a nice feature....especially if you ever hang at a Starbucks or anywhere they offer wireless connectivity.
Display features are also something to compare notes on:
Sony and HP offer
17.0" WXGA+ Wide Viewing (1440x900)
17.0" WXGA+ BrightView Wide Viewing (1440x900)
17.0" WSXGA+ BrightView Wide Viewing (1680x1050)
My Laptop has a 6-in-1 digital media card reader (compatible with xD digital memory, Secure Digital, MultiMediaCard, Memory Stick, MS-Pro Memory Stick, and SmartMedia cards. All of which have come in hand with the variety of digital camera's we use at work.
Make sure that you have expansion/scaling capabilities...how many USB ports?
Also check and see if there are accessories, such as a docking port of which some have 200GB HD's built in to the port. Makes it nice as well when you would rather use a regular keyboard and mouse over the laptops.
Sony & HP offer these.
Have you looked at a PC Tablet too?
Have fun in whatever you purchase.May your shit come to life and kiss you on the face.
