  • Laptops! know them? (not a parody thread)

Ok, in a year or so I'll be going uni (well, that's the plan anyway) and in the mean time I've decided to think about getting a laptop for working on, however the world of laptops is a new one to me. So, to the point I basically want to know would it be worth it, any good/bad experiences with a certain manufacturer or seller and any other odd bit of information you could throw my way. I appreciate it, thanks.

Well first thing to decide is how much are you willing to spend on your laptop... then you have to decide between having a powerfull machine but much more heavy or a light machine but less powerfull, basicly deciding how to balance processor speed with lightweight, buy a centrino they are great processors, oh and from personal experience i suggest giving priority on weight... since you don't want to carry a big laptop around all day... I've had 2 sony vaio and i have a samsung now, they are both great and very small and lightweight and have a very extended autonomy.

Your uni will most likely have a large amount of publically available computers (Pc's and mac's) for you to use, so only get a laptop if you want to waste your time playing games on it/take it into lectures to take notes on. I wouldn't reccomend taking notes on a laptop, though.

Agreed. If you've got a problem with Dell, you're going to have a problem with ANY laptop.

My cousins have matching Dell Laptops that are more powerful than my desktop .... I'd go order one of those. If you're a richass, though, get an Alienware Area-51m

My sister has a nice Acer laptop, it was £700-800 (bought it about a year ago). It's pretty lightweight and has everything she needs; a semi decent sized HDD, decent amount of RAM, respectable processor (I would give numbers but I really can't remember).

She has had no problems with it yet.

Pro Star makes a decent professional Laptop. I just purchased an HP ZD8000 and I have no problems with taking it with me back and forth to work.

Few things to look at are:

Battery life vs. power source availability
                        Weight
Size of course...was a pain in the ass to find a bag to lug the ZD8000 around in...but I found one!

Features needed...such as DVD-R/CDR burner, Ram, Screen type, multiple ports and connectors, S-Video TV out.

54g Integ. Broadcom 802.11b/g WLAN & Bluetooth card is also a nice feature....especially if you ever hang at a Starbucks or anywhere they offer wireless connectivity.

Display features are also something to compare notes on:
                        Sony and HP offer

                        17.0" WXGA+ Wide Viewing (1440x900)
                        17.0" WXGA+ BrightView Wide Viewing (1440x900)
                        17.0" WSXGA+ BrightView Wide Viewing (1680x1050)

My Laptop has a 6-in-1 digital media card reader (compatible with xD digital memory, Secure Digital, MultiMediaCard, Memory Stick, MS-Pro Memory Stick, and SmartMedia cards. All of which have come in hand with the variety of digital camera's we use at work.

Make sure that you have expansion/scaling capabilities...how many USB ports?

Also check and see if there are accessories, such as a docking port of which some have 200GB HD's built in to the port. Makes it nice as well when you would rather use a regular keyboard and mouse over the laptops.

                        Sony & HP offer these.

Have you looked at a PC Tablet too?

Have fun in whatever you purchase.
May your shit come to life and kiss you on the face.

I was in the same boat, and while I know dick all about computers I can tel lyou abut the pro's and cons of having a laptop at uni, I've been using one for the past two years. Its a lot better for taking home with you if you go home often or on the train. I hardly go home but when I do its on the train. You should get yourself an auxilary cable that plugs into your stereo and the other end will go into your headphone jack in your laptop, I can post a picture of one if you want and you can take it into a hifi shop. They'll know what you'rte talking about anyway a they're really common and only about £6. You'll also beceom really envious of everoyne elses PC's because despite all the promises of a super duper laptop with a billion gigahertz when you go to PC world, the fact remains its a laptop and about an 1/8th of the size of a normal computer, so an 1/8th as good. Unless you're willing to splash a lot of cash. Try and get something with memory too as the first thing you'll do at uni so go through everonye else's cds and put them onto your computer. I've got 350mb left on my laptop out of 30GB
