  • What is considered a Sport?

I am amazed that ESPN2 covers Poker as a sport. It's bad enough that an Indy Race Car driver is now considered an athlete, but Poker?

Hmm I can only imagine the need for a personal trainer for helping keep a poker player form. Chips and Beer diet with a pair of cool sunglasses.

I like poker, but I am so amazed that it is now considered to be a sport.

I guess TW really is a sport then!

Well...I would consider it a sport

FCC won't, but it meets the criteria of ESPN

Hmm, perhaps the definition of sport according to ESPN is an activity where you compete with yourself or with other players?

A game or competition involving physical activity or physical ability. Poker is not. Neither is the spelling bee.

i think espn is just simply jumping onto the holdem bandwagon. they realized people are willing to watch it, so they put it on and started orienting some of their programming towards high stakes gambling.
            thread killer

Also who changed to pw to Squadless, how am I supposed to fly the banner of sucking at the game

as far as i know, darts has been trying to convert itself from being a "game" to a "sport". i think it has to get a certificate of some kind so it is officially a sport, but i don't know what the criteria is

Curling is sport too. The world has gone mad.

The only sports we need is womens volleyball. Indoors and beach. And an occasional football game. Nothing else.

                  ESPN *created* the Hold'Em bandwagon.

In my mind, Rounders made hold'em popular, or at least people started knowing about it. WSOP on ESPN is what made it blow up, especially Moneymaker winning. ESPN has been showing WSOP forever...and as far as I know the only ones who showed poker before a couple of years ago. Travel Channel and all these celebrity poker/heads up tourneys are the band wagon hoppers.

Have you all seen the Full Tilt commercials? http://www.fulltiltpoker.com/commercials.php I think they're kind of cool considering the usual cheezy poker commercials.

I think it's pretty clear that Poker is a game, not a sport. Same thing with golf. Despite what some idiots think, golf is just a game, not a sport. Why? Because if you can be a fat fuck (ie: John Daly, Kevin and Craig Stadler...etc), alcoholic, AND a smoker, yet achieve the highest levels of success, they you're not an ATHLETE, and you're just playing a game.

Indy Racing (or Nascar, etc) is a sport, however, because you have to be physically fit in order to be successful. For one, it takes a good deal of strength and physical stamina, because you're whipping around a track being subjected to a lot of G-Force for long periods of time while taking very few breaks. And a racing team will drop you as a driver if you are carrying a bunch of unnecessary weight.

The only reason why ESPN has marketed poker as a sport is because it's in its financial interests to give poker as much legitimacy as possible. They have the rights to the prestigious WSOP contract.

Golf is a sport because it involves physical abilities. Defining a sport by how fit you have to be is weird. Have you seen NFL linemen these days? Do you know how old Mark Martin is?

I'm pretty sure John Daly could pound me into the ground anyway.

Ok, so when John Daly becomes a professional fighter, I'll consider him an athlete.

Until then, I'll consider him a tortured soul who plays a non-athletic skill game.

Just like those idiots that think baseball is a sport... what a joke. Take a look at Roger Clemens!

                            /sarcasm

You've obviously never played golf to any extent have you? It involves quite a bit of physicality, especially the way the pros play it with all the walking and all the games in a few days and all. It requires quite a bit of stamina to still be able to hit perfectly after playing so many days in a row.
