Steve D draws first blood with a 10 million pot on a board of Q 5 2 6 Q. Steve had two pair with a 6, and Joe mucked.

A 6 5 with two diamonds. Steve bets and Joe mucks.

700k raise by Steve and a call. 6 5 4 with two diamonds. Check by Joe, 700k by Steve, checkraise for one million more by Joe and a call. Turn A of Spades. Joe Hachem bets out 2 million. Steve Hannenmamm pops it up 3 million more. Hachem goes all-in Dannenmann calls. Hachem flops a 7 high straight. Dannenmann is drawing to a tie only with A 3. Steve has three outs for a tie. 4 of Clubs on the river. Joseph Hachem is the new World Champion. His winning hand was 7 3.

$7.5 million dollars richer. Nice little payout.

there's a great article in salon about how the wsop is getting more fucked up because they're letting too many players in. that means that a single bad break for one of the truly great players can fuck them up because they have to play so much. the more rounds, the more luck is involved, and the harder it becomes to weed out the "nobodies." which means that every year could be a Chris Moneymaker year. he went out in like the first round this time.

Moneymaker was a fluke, no doubt. They need to have some sort of prerequisites for getting into the main event, and anyone who doesn't meet those prerequisites should have to play through elimination matches or something. I dunno, I'm not as involved in playing as I was a couple of years ago, but it seems fucked up that any idiot with ten grand could walk into the big dance and ride a wave of luck all the way to a payout of millions. They need to weed these fluke fucks out.
