how can you say walter payton isnt the best ever.... i mean shit before emmet smith played 100 seasons he had rushing record in half as many seasons.... and half the plays like the goal line "jump over bodys" play was invented by him...and he was just...amazing if you watched him. Emmit smith had a O-line with him all the time...shit the ONLY good teams the bears put around payton was around 83-86...3 seasons and he started in 75 with NO team around him...i mean he carried the ball without an O-line for sooo long....

Walter Payton had a pretty good offensive-line, too. The Cowboys though, yeah they had a great O-line. But who could forget the toughness Emmitt Smith displayed. I remember when he dislocated his shoulder, in the frozen temperature's of December on the road against the New York Giants. It was a must-win game for Dallas, if they wanted to earn a bye-week and gain home-field advantage. Yet even with the dislocated shoulder he kept playing on. He refused to let his team lose and each carry he had you could see the agony as they tackled him on that very shoulder. He eventually helped Dallas win that game, and the Super Bowl vs the Bills. He was a warrior, and always came up big when Dallas needed him. Thats why I place him at #1. Only the true greats can play with such pain and agony and refuse to be taken out of the game, and still win.

I always liked Barry but the one knock on him was he wasn't reliable. He'd get nothing nothing nothing, then break a run for 80 yards. If you needed a few yards you could count on Emmit to get it. Jim Brown was of course the most dominating, he was heads and shoulders above anyone else when he was playing, but it was easier back then.

Very good point, Sleepy. Which is why I didn't put him at my #1 spot. He made too many dance moves at times instead of just hitting the hole and taking what the defense gave. He was a very fun player to watch, but come playoff time, his style got exposed.
