I disagree... in fact I think the opposite is true. Lets say most of your miles are highway miles. You hit the accelerator in the beginning, getting a nice boost up to highway speeds, then set the cruise control. For all but about 15 seconds of the trip you're going at the exact same speed, using around the same amount of gas, getting the best possible fuel economy you can get.

I don't think taking 30 seconds to get up to highway speeds will use significantly more fuel than taking 7.5 seconds to get up to highway speeds, considering the vast majority of the trip is exactly the same.

Also, RPMS are irrelevant as well. With my old car (4 banger), 3200 rpm was about the norm for 65 mph highway speeds. My new car (6 cyl) can do the same in half the rpms or less. The old car got 34 mpg, my new one gets 29.

If you mean new car in a literal sense it'll probably take the engine some time to break in, and you'll notice a 3-5 mpg improvement when that happens.

I got about 39 mpg out of my old I-4 and about 35 out of my "new" V-6. I used to take a V-8 on business trips, and if I was gentle with the gas pedal (which I usually am) I could clear 30 mpg with that. So it's not ALL in the way you drive, but that's a huge part of it. Nailing the throttle to 6000 RPM's at every stoplight is just about guaranteed to drop you down to the 15-18 mpg range.

Not to mention blowing the engine entirely if it redlines at 5.5 like my car

4 cyl 8 cyl hehehe...does it really matter? My fav. engine is a 4 cyl 2.8 litre 1977 Porsche 911 engine with replaced points on the cap to an electronic points system using pertronics system. Headers for a bit more compression...not necessarily the loud sound that so many people get these for and not the actual benefits it gives when they are not adjusted correctly. And depending on the engine and the carb systems...you can always get more from a set of weber carbs if you do a big bore modifictaion that many have done on older dual carbed 1600 CC engines.

Only reason I would need an 8 Cyl. engine would be so that I could have the HP to pull a trailer or boat on a hitch.

Don't get me wrong...certain cars should have an 8 on them, such as a 68 Firebird or Mustang!

As for new cars...if you need to hook it up to a computer to do a tune-up...I am lost....I am old school....I like the fact that I can see the ground under my engine. New cars...crap...how can you see anything with all the plastic and wiring harness's?

Got a 65 Land Rover Series IIA 88 with a 4cyl....and in the few times I have off-road with this, I ended up pulling a Jeep Wrangler and a New Land Rover Discovery from the track.....and yet I had no problems at all....also sucks that I have no Overdrive ....but who the hell drives over 45mph on mud tracks
May your shit come to life and kiss you on the face.
