I've kind of dated across the spectrum, however I don't think that my parents are conservative enough to say "marry an asian girl or else." The most negative response I've gotten from them is when I dated an Indian girl.

The situation you witnessed may be circumstantial. The problem is not only with the Asian exoticism TK explained, but it is also historical. I did a thesis on the emasculinization of the Asian male in America, and during my research I found out that the only reason why there exists an "americanized" version of the Asian (spike hair, ricer, hyper violent, etc) is to counteract a historical "de-masculinization" of the Asian male. What kind of demasculinization you ask? Well, laundromats (early 1900s), non-physical jobs, stature, cultural upbringing. Just to name a few. Why is the Asian race considered to be the model minority? The question becomes trivial if you consider how passivity is rewarded in society. How many civil rights movement leaders were Asian? What kinds of measures did Asians take after the Japanese American Internment? Thats right. We're a bunch of pussies.

Did you know at 6 ft tall I am statistically taller than 99.7% of all Japanese men?

As to the Asian girl with the white guy - personally I do think this happens a lot more than an Asian guy with a white girl. I don't have the numbers to back it up, but I see it a lot more often. When I dated a white girl, it was not only uncommon, but I was judged more by Asians than by whites. Her family, which is italian, was perhaps more concerned with my religious background than my ethnicity.

But you do raise an interesting point - because sometimes I do get an intuitive feeling that somehow caucasian males are taking advantage of Asian females, but that would be generalizing things a bit too much. I believe that if the guy on the train treats his asian gf with love and respect, then the asian guy who's looking at her doesn't have a basis to judge them racially or otherwise.

I didn't think it was an "accomplishment" when I date a white girl, but rather it was the right person at the time.

Everyone guy has at least a little bit of an asian fetish. If you're on this forum and telcat is the only asian girl you know, then you're really missing the point and should probably get out more.

Another factor is the decades-long period of immigration laws barring Chinese from immigrating to Canada or the U.S.. That's a part of the history books that often gets overlooked. For a decades (1882-1943 for the U.S., 1923-1947 for Canada), Chinese were either limited in, or outright banned from immigrating to North America. As a result, thousands of Chinese males who had crossed the Atlantic looking for work around the turn of the century were often left alone in the West with very few chinese women. Chinese women were actually barred earlier than Chinese men because the governments wanted the men's labour but didn't want the Chinese to reproduce. The campaign of de-masculinization that Bioture mentioned also made interracial relationships very rare. There were also few Chinese civil rights leaders because, when the civil rights movement gained momentum, the Chinese were a very small minority due to the limitations to immigration, and those few Chinese who were in North America were either too old or too young in the 1950's-1960's to have a very strong voice. There were too few 20-40 year olds Chinese North Americans. While immigration rules were relatively loosened, there was still a maximum quota for incoming Chinese Americans until the 70's. The new generations were still far too young and uneducated while the older ones had spent most of their lives subjucated. The Chinese did benefit by the civil rights movement, but they remained mostly silent participants. Only more recently has this history been explored in depth as Chinese academics grow in number.

I don't know to whom I'd like to respond, the guy who cracked the asian joke--shame on you, by the way--or the fact about all the people becoming homogeneous.

I always thought that at one time, we would all be the same, but it seems to be drifting further and further away as I think about how everyone would have to marry interracially for many, many years before it even begins to happen. I also believe that 200-300 years is way too short for anything of that big a change to happen.

I don't mean to start another argument, but I do believe that's evolution?

Culturally, Western society has made the Asian female seem exotic, almost like a fetish. At the same time, Asian males are almost desexualized. Just take a look at examples from film, like Romeo Must Die. The title implies a Romeo and Juliet theme of lovers from opposing factions. The film does feature two characters, Jet Li's and Aaliyah's, who are from opposing gangs, but there's no romantic connection. Throughout Hollywood history, Asian men are rarely presented in a sexually masculine way. There are rarely any mainstream films in which the Asian guy gets the girl. The only example I can think of is Harold and Kumar Go To Whitecastle, but that film was all about playing on racial types and twisting them around anyway. Take a look at some of the more recognized Asian celebrities in western culture: Jackie Chan, Jet Li, Chow Yun Fat and Lucy Liu. Of the men, only Chow Yun Fat has that romantic leading man kind of image, but his few western roles don't reflect upon them much. Jackie Chan and Jet Li however don't have that romantic or sexual appeal. Compare these to Lucy Liu and you'll see how much of a difference there is. Seeing Lucy Liu in a Maxim photo shoot isn't that big a deal, but try imaginine Jet Li in a similar shoot for a women's magazine. Age is a factor too. Asian male celebrities tend to be older. You don't have the young Asian male as much as you'll find the young Asian female.

The result of this cultural sexualization and de-sexualization is that it becomes easier for an Asian woman to attract a non-Asian man, and at the same time, harder for an Asian man to attract a non-Asian woman.

Another factor, affecting Chinese Asians moreso than others, is how they culturally view themselves. China has long had an isolationalistic history, shutting themselves off from other cultures. Traditionally, the Chinese word for "human" or "person" referred only to Chinese people. That's why in many Chinese dialects, the word for White people can be loosely translated as "ghost" or "spirit" or even "demon". Chinese culture has long been very xenophobic. It's not really as hateful as it sounds though. Part of it has to do with how China has stood against outsiders in the past. One of the peculiarities about Chinese history is that, though it has been conquered by outside forces several times in the past, almost invariably, the invaders wind up being the ones who get integrated into Chinese (or more specifially, Chinese Han) culture, not the other way around as logic dictates.

Another theory is more about gender than race. The way a lot of Asians view interracial coupling is that when a White man is with an Asian woman, he's got a fetish for Asians and she's a sexual object. When an Asian man is with a White woman, he's managed to achieve something, and, again, she's a sexual object.

My parents have told me that they don't mind if I wind up with a non-Chinese girl. In fact, they expect that to happen more likely than my finding a Chinese mate. Part of that has to do with immigration patterns. More recent immigrants to North America (and their off-spring) are more likely to stick within their cultures, while immigrants from the 70s or 80s (and their kids) are more likely to mix. That's because when earlier immigrants came over, there wasn't as much of an Asian presence. In the last two decades however, immigration has ballooned and there's a larger infrastructure for Asian culture. There's not as much of a need to adapt or become "westernized". As a result, children from earlier waves of Asian immigrants, like myself, grew up "White", as it were. That's not to say that children of more recent immigrants won't either. They just have more options available to them. Of course, I'm speaking as a person growing up in multi-cultural Toronto. Different areas with different demographics and Asian populations will be at different stages of the same process, so someone who is Asian growing up in say, Newfoundland, would culturally grow up the same as an Asian child in Vancouver in the 80s.
Thanks for turning what I said into that post.

No seriously, thank you, I didn't want to explain myself.
                        The pleasure's all mine.

What's the ghost/spirit word for whites?

In my experience, usually whites are referred to as (incorrect romanization coming up) "baiyin" which means "white person" and foreigners as "waigoryin" which is "outside country person". I don't think its common nowadays for the ghost/sprit/etc. word to be used.

Also IME, the persons that tend to get the inherent cultural diss from the Chinese are the Japanese (everyone else casually gets called old, as in old black, old white, etc. whereas the Japanese get little) and blacks.

It depends on dialect. There are many different Chinese dialects that use different terminology and pronounciation and some are more common in other areas, so not all dialects would be familiar with it. It also may or may not have racist undertones depending on how it's interpreted. On one hand, people might say it's a reference to skin colour (as in "ghostly white") but on the other hand, people might interpret the term as "spirit" meaning "foreign" rather than describing skin colour. I think the term is slowly being phased out of use as more PC terms like "Westerner" come into use.

I am only doing this in bad taste, don't get your panties in a knot.

white males statistically have larger penises? (penii?) than asian males. Hence why asian women are dating white males. They just need deep dicking.

Seriously, some people still have the ignorant thoughts that you should date within your own race. We are all humans, it don't matter.
