I look back on middle school thinking about what a waste it was, and chances are I'll do the same once I'm in college looking back on high school. Thank God I'm taking college classes next year, instead of the high school ones at my crappy school.

Ok, I'll elaborate
During middle school, everything was completely dumbed down so even the stupid kids could pass. All the teachers were really lenient about everything. I remember showing my brother, who is in high school, my perfect grade card and he'd tell me that middle school doesn't matter at all, just wait and see. Lo and behold I'm out of middle school, and I see that I really didn't learn anything at all.
So when I entered high school, I thought that it might be a little bit harder and I'd have to actually work to get my grades. Turns out that high school is basically just a repeat of middle school, just a tiny bit harder, because there is more homework. Sure, I'm learning a few things, but nothing I'm really going to use later in life. I don't know what I'm going to do, but I'm sure I don't need to know how much light there is at the bank of a creek compared to in the middle. So anyway, I found out that except for a few teachers, as in one, which is an honors class, high school is essentially the same. Everything is dumbed down, the teachers don't care about you at all, and half of the time is spent doing busy work. I'm sure once I start my college classes, I'm going to hate going to school even more.Pandagirl!

Yeah, something like that. The schools depend a lot on location.
Where do you live, and what kind of community is it? Urban/suburb/rural etc.
Edit:Fixing accident-prone cars.
I hit a parked car over the summer (spare me the teasing) and with insurance and estimates and whatnot, it took a month and a half and a $500 deductible off a $2300 some fee. I mistaked the gas for the brake, leave me aloneboo...

One of the main reasons for having to take a broad range of classes in high school is to prepare you for college---and life in general. That's why they again make you take the same broad range of classes to complete your Gen Ed requirements when getting your undergraduate degree.
The mandate of the particular educational subjects you mentioned attempts to inspire intellectual curiosity, basic communication skills, an understanding of political systems, logic, arts and culture, and prepares the student to think critically. This general knowledge helps a person become a well-rounded individual who can contribute to the advancement of our civilization. That's the reason why they created a public school system in the first place. Well, I take that back---they did it so you could have a better knowledge of the bible (hence, be a better Christian), but then it was the advancement of society as a close second.
As a corollary, if the general public were more educated on subjects like science and history, our politicians would not get away with nearly as much of their logic-defying, bullshit talking points like: "the jury's still out on evolution" and "unaccountable judiciary", as two examples. If the average person chose to utilize critical thinking skills, we would be lied to and manipulated a hell of a lot less.

I maintain that school at least serves the purpose of socialization and discipline. Adding the structure of organized schooling is what is really debatable.
My opinion is that learning is an intrinsically satisfying event. Pre-school infants and children are sponges when it comes to learning. When we were all very young, we all had a strong desire to learn everything we could. It was fun to learn. But something happened to most of us, learning became something to dislike.
I think that putting value judgments on the learning event is greatly responsible for this. I mean ‘grades’. Take another intrinsically satisfying event for humans, sex. Now imagine your partner ‘grading’ this all the time. My wife says to me, ‘hmmm, that was about a D-‘. Over and over, your partner grades you every time you have sex. Pretty soon, you start worrying about your abilities. Pretty soon you start thinking that maybe you don’t need sex (with another person) all that much. Pretty soon, the amount of intrinsic satisfaction drops a lot.
