It's funny because my friend has to go to court for almost the exact same thing.

        - I don't think that it is a valid excuse that other people do it.

        - Bottom line is that someone reported you, probably someone who was trying to enjoy their right to sleep or study, saw you leave with music still playing, and got pissed at the inconsideration. Be mad at the person who reported you, not the cops who have to do their jobs. Once a report has been made, cops are required to deal with it, they can't ignore it.

        - Cops don't drive around looking to screw with a college kid playing his music too loud, they actually have better things to do. Perhaps it pissed them off that they even had to spend our money to come out and deal with it all. What do you think it cost us all to send a pair of cops out to deal with this kind of stuff? While they were dealing with this, they weren't available to deal with the stuff they should be attending to, like real crime.

Given this, is it not your responsibility to pay for the cost of the use of these services (apparently used twice)? Someone reported you, right or wrong. Forget if the cops were dicks or not, fact is that the use of public services costs all of us money. They were called, they came, they are pinning the cost on you. Be responsible and pay it. If you feel you were falsely reported, go take it up with that person. And next time understand that when you live in close quarters with others, everyone needs to have consideration for each other.

True story as it was related to me from a friend in an Atlanta court room fighting a traffic ticket.

Eph’s friend> Judge, this is unfair and I shouldn’t have to pay this fine.
          Judge> That’s $100 sir.
          Eph’s friend> bullshit
          Judge> That’s $250 sir.
          Eph’s friend> Wait a second, how can you…
          Judge> That’s $500 sir.
          Eph’s friend>Oh my god…
          Judge> That’s $750 sir.
          Silence
Judge> Do you have anything else to say?
          Eph’s friend> No sir.

In the police report, of which you are privy to, it will have to list who complained about you, if it is an official complaint. So at least you will know who dropped the dime.

If they find you guilty, ask the judge if you can do the time in the local jail cell. Being that it is a township, the cell's cannot be that large. For $300, figure that they will keep you in a cell for a day at most with the 3 meals they will have to serve you plus the time to keep a township cop in the vacinity of the holding cell as a guard. The fee's in just placing you in a cell and feeding you will be too much for them.

I did this on a metered parking ticket and the judge was blown away that I asked to do the time. He more or less thought I was nuts and dismissed the case and fine. It would have been 1 hour to sit in the cell for my fine, but I would have milked it so that I could make them give me a meal.

They work for you as it is anyway...civil servants.

BTW...guess PSU has to settle for a crap bowl this year. Gotta love USC and Texas
May your shit come to life and kiss you on the face.

As 404 correctly points out, "They work for you as it is anyway...civil servants."

We all pay the taxes that go for paying for these services. So doing something that requires police or firemen to come to your house costs us all money. Going into court and fighting something that you are really responsible for costs us all money. Playing games like dodging a court fee by offering to sit in jail costs us all money.

So if someone cost the rest of us money when they knew they should be responsible, that their actions did indeed cause the use of these services, then they should be a man and pay the fine.

If the issue is a bad law, there are ways to change the law. But this kind of stuff is never about that, it is about people who refuse to take responsibility for their own actions and force the rest of us to pay for it. People seek excuses and make justifications to make themselves feel like they did nothing wrong. They certainly do not want to not pay for their mistakes and would rather blindly push the cost to society (like they aren’t a part of it).

Perhaps as some of you get older, pay taxes, possibly even needing the laws and court system, your perspective will change like mine has. Given the story as Bio related it, my opinion is that his actions caused the use of these services. The reasoning he used to defend his actions (others party, his first party, music was already on, his friends share responsibility, etc.) do not constitute removing his responsibility. He broke the law defined as “with intent to cause public inconvenience, annoyance, or alarm - making unreasonable noise”. The law exists to protect the rights of others, rights he violated by disturbing them at 1AM in the morning. My opinion is that he should take the high road, admit that he is responsible, pay the fine, learn the lesson, and be a better person for the experience.

We've apparently met two different kinds of cops in our life. I'd just pay the fine though.

True, but if live a good, honorable life now, when you get older and think back, you'll be able to enjoy it a second time.

I would also add that the willingness to accept responsibility for one's own actions is the source from which self-respect springs.

the problem is, eph, in many many college towns, the police DO drive around looking to screw with college kids, because its the only crime there is. your point that he used the taxpayers money by having to have the police sent to his house is flawed. most college towns have a ridiculous amount of police driving around at all times. if the police on duty werent sent to biotures house, they would have been driving around looking for people committing crimes such as open container violations, instead. its not like they got called out of bed to go to biotures house, or like murders are going unsolved in state college as a result of his actions.

when i lived in new orleans, where there was real crime, the police didnt act the same way at all. they might take the time out of their day to lecture you, but theres no way theyd get caught up in any sort of paperwork over some dumb college kids making noise or drinking underage, its clearly a waste of time when there are other crimes to be solved.

im fairly sure you live in the asheville/hendersonville area, so maybe that has shaped your view of the police. the police there are significantly more lenient and reasonable there than most places ive experienced; there is a vast difference between the police in a laid-back community such as asheville and the kind of police they hire in a college town in pennsylvania.

When there are a lot of cops and no real crime, the only thing anyone can do is cause real crim for them to deal with so people don't get hassled for trying to enjoy themselves in this piss ass society, which is ironically as horrible as it is due to these righteous, shiney badge wearing, never wrong fucking lowlives. The best way is to take care of both the excess of cops and the lack of crime at the exact same time. Unfortunately being a poor college student without silenced 9's makes this an impossible task for you, unless you are extremely quick at closing the critical distance needed and also can exert the twisting force needed to sever the spine. I suppose bombs can work but bombs draw a lot more attention than the one at a time approach.
Some may view it as a bit extreme, but as it has been said before, using the system to try to defend yourself gets you nowhere, and its not as if the law body doesn'ty always gang up on your ass in the first place, the ridiculousity of humanity is that this fact isnt what is considered extreme, but rather the only true solution to it is. Subscribing yourself to the will of these people only makes you a tool for them, along with trying to use their backwards system for anything other than dishing out your hard earned money to them after they harass you.

I'm very serious, that push back and charge manuever should have been the end to the guy's pitiful life, but he knew no one would do anything to him. They all know that, thats why they do such things and always get away with it. Only when you earn yourself a will of your own seperate from that of the society's, a true will to fight for your Self, as it is all one truly has in this existence, will you ever be free from such senseless bullshit. But this will never change will it? You're in college, you've already subscribed quite a substantial amount of your Self into the machine which has done nothing but inhibit it, unknowingly of course, but that's how these spineless fuckers are still around today. You think it was just a push? It was the push of society, knocking you Self back and toying with it as per it's collective will, it is the significant note of your subcription to your slavery to this society under which you can never really live as yourself with your Self in one piece. He would not have pushed you and charged in if he did not know that any worries of a Self he dared to step upon wasn't completely under the control of the society's will. Do you really think if he though you were someone whose Self was free from the will he would have pushed you? A person who has their whole Self would not have tolerated it.

It is the same sad story for an entirer population of individuals who cannot and never shall be able to realize themselves, due to the controls put on it by the governing body they live under, and of course they make sure none of them know this, while acting like it is a rather good and fair deal. I don't care who you are, if you think that is so, then I can only be glad that you are surely mortal and that you will one day be gone while I hope the person who takes your place will be able to see passed the temporary pleasures and half freedom that have fooled so many others and most importantly of all, your Self.
