Network knowledge

I am thinking of acquiring some network knowledge (preferably something to do with linux clusters and microsoft port security and management). Since I am terribly lazy, I am thinking of going for certificates because once I buy the books and pay for the exam on a certain date, I have the motivation and pressure to get it done.
Should I go for cisco certificates, or is there anything else better … how does it work and what books should I buy?
