    Stick them in your ear?

There's lots of ways to block sound-

    Sealed, over the ear http://www.headphone.com/guide/by-he...ser-hd-201.php

Ear buds block some sound (and go in the ear)

In-ear monitor block more (and go in the ear)

Active noise cancelling use batteries and a processor to generate cancelling noise

I tried the noise blocking triports, it works very well if you're in a place that is consistently noisy - like a plane, or a crowded room. If you have roomates who periodically screams at the TV cuz theyre playing madden... well... then not so well. I don't think its worth the money because most closed headphones that cover your year provides some sort of noise blocking.

I'd never wear them because I'd be paranoid about people sneaking up on me

Za gophar: Buy the IEMs from some place that allows you a return, so if the comfort is bad you can return them.

I find the most comfortable tips to be the Shure soft flex tips (although I don't actually use the Shure IEMs). Their isolation is not as good as that of the tri-flange or foam tips, but I can sit in the back of a car with the stereo at full blast and still listen to music on mp3 player at normal volume (and my normal volume isn't particularly high mind you) without hearing the car stereo.
