The monthly fee is very simple. The cost to run the servers, consume that much banwidth, train and keep tech support and game masters almost 24/7 and to produce updates and fixes to the game world... a small fee is needed. These games are not your normal run around shoot em up FPS, it's an entire virtual world you have to explore and to gain rank, real estate and wealth in.

The orignal cost of the box and CDs/DVDs will rarely generate a profit and probably is for covering distrbution, development and everything else pre-release.

As for the goal and what these games can give, WoW is very quest based but there's more to MMOG then that. Leveling is one important aspect but other skills like mining, blacksmith and others can provide you with money to buy weapons, unique materials and make your overall game experience more enjoyable.

On TW we're maintaining a single server paying 1-2 terabytes per month and barely holding 500 players at one time. All of this is paid for by Priit who is now rich due to the Skype deal. Other zone costs are very minimal and probably, if needed, get funding from SSC. 700-1000 per month at the most.


WoW has something like 15 servers, with thousands of players on each at one time with a full 3D enviroment. I couldn't even guess their costs but I can tell you most new massive online games don't make a profit for at least 5 years.

Basically. You pay the $50 for the game that cost them millions of man hours to make, and you pay the $13 a month for the thousands of man hours that go into it a month. Not even to mention how much the servers cost, and how much they cost to maintain.

I think I read like month or two ago that 4 million copies of wow has been sold. So they got 200M$ from that.

So It's been out 8 months. Let's think that 1M has played it whole 8 monts, 1M 6 months, 1M 4 months and the last 1M 2 months. That's 104M$+78M$+52M$+26M$ = 260M$ (+200M$ = 460M$). I would say that is a lot of money.

Of course not everyone plays it monthly but I bet they still make enough from it.

People pay for it every month for the same reason that you log into Subspace. As Vyk plainly stated, it's because that people find it fun. No one's forcing you to sign up.
