                    Group Project Proposal

Identify a body of primary sources relevant to your topic

                    • In terms of primary sources, obviously looking at mass-observation
o This gives us the unofficial perspective and addresses the issue directly
o Pitfalls associated with M-O still applies, being that the man on the street shouldn’t be taken as a valid historical argument, that M-O had eccentric methodology and no comparative framework. Should never take individually
                    • Also looking at private papers regarding opinions and the unofficial view
o Much the same as M-O except in this circumstance only used to support arguments, as was not subjected to any form of processing like the data in M-O and these private papers don’t set policy or affect the history looking at, just give an isolated viewpoint
                    • Also attempt to gain the official perspective on race relations within the UK, going to use state papers and various media
o Help us establish whether any feelings were established from top-down or bottom-up
o Whether govt initiatives were encouraging the feeling, possibly inadvertently
                    • In terms of addressing the problematics
o M-O gives us the direct answers to the first issue – whether people inherited racial ideologies or whether it was shaped by personal experiences. The diary entries will be especially useful for this
o Also highly useful for identifying whether the public approved of government policies. References to this may be hidden within entries which address a different issue though. Obviously the state papers will be useful as we need to identify the govt policies first
o Private papers will be useful in addressing the issue of comparing Jews to immigrants of other ethnic backgrounds, as they are likely to contain recommendations from the public about dealing with their perceived problem
                    • Particularly useful for the whole project would be the M-O Race Directives for the years 1942 and 1943, which are housed at Soton and Brighton. If we are able to find certain M-O entries that ask the same questions that we are – i.e. how the racial feelings manifested themselves, then it would be extremely useful.

Not sure why the 1942 and 1943 entries are useful, I'm waiting for Nick to text back
