  • Positive and Negative effects of growing up in the past decade?, 1995-2005

What do you think are some positive and negative effects of growing up in the past 10 years? We've had a bunch of improvements in concerns to living in the past decade, be it communications, medical care, technological , whatever. Please share some of the positie and effects that you think have come from living through these improvements. A few examples-

    Example #1
    ----
Positive- The internet has expanded dramatically and now people are able to communicate with others around the world in a matter of seconds via AIM, e-mail and message boards. People are more informed about world events, or at least have the chance to be more informed, and everyone has the chance to interact with people they would otherwise never see or talk to outside the digital world.

Negative- Thousands use the internet as a means of escape from their mundane and boring lives (MMO's, chat rooms, etc), sexual and monetary predators stalk the internet, just waiting to take advantage of you or a loved one. Some people have grown cynical after reading up on world events or seeing how bad some parts of the world are.

    Example #2
    ---

Positive- Cell phones are smaller and easier to carry around, multiple networks and types of phones/ phone modifications allow people to choose what they think is best for them, or what fits their personality. Family plans also help keep families connected and informed throughout the work day or during trips.

Negative- Cell phones are a distraction and annoyance in the classroom, they are just another step on the road to more impersonal communication between humans, and too many people have loud, annoying ring-tones.

    Example #3
    ---

Positive- Television has grown over the years and you can safely say there is one in every home, with tons of shows to choose from and TiVo to help catch you favorite shows.

Negative- Most of the shows suck these days.

    ---
The above examples are not how I feel about the subjects, they're just there to help you understand what I want to hear from you guys.
My father in law was telling me over Thanksgiving about this amazing bartender at some bar he frequented who could shake a martini and fill it to the rim with no leftovers and he thought it was the coolest thing he'd ever seen. I then proceeded to his home bar and made four martinis in one shaker with unfamiliar glassware and a non standard shaker and did the same thing. From that moment forward I knew he had no compunction about my cock ever being in his daughter's mouth.

I don't really have anything to compare it with as I don't remember the prvious decade but I'll try.

Negative: The increasing violence and gore on movies and games de-sensitizing most people (not saying it causes crime).

Positive: Children are getting better treatment, they're becoming another human instead of an inferior being. However,...

Negative: imo, a lack of discipline with children is ruining our society.

Liquid blue pretty much covered the most important ones tbh

            but:

Cars: more and more people using it; cars are getting more reliable in general and cheaper to buy.

negative: killing off our world with pollution, petrol has a very limited supply; and we're starving our world of this resource. Petrol companies pretty much countrol the stock market as it is. More road accidents, and things like drink + driving. Chavs doing up their cars ridiculous, when they look so shit

Pro: Accessibility of information, especially small, not particularly important but it still feels good to know kind of trivia. If you wanted to find some piece of information, you can always try and google it up. You still have to be smart in how you perform your searches, but if you wanted to find out what the lead singer mumbled in the second verse of that song or wondered why the voice for that character in that cartoon sounded so familiar, there are many resources to help you find it quickly.

Con: With quick accessibility comes the reduction of things to short sound bites. People want things fast and in a tidy package, but our attention spans have been reduced.

Another effect of growing up in the last decade is the increased use of our thumbs instead of our other fingers. With previous generations, the index finger was the most prominent digit used for most things, but people are slowly evolving to use their thumbs more. If you watch older people using a TV remote, they'll often hold the remote kind of like how you would hold a mouse, with their index finger poised to hit the various buttons. That's been dying out as people start using their thumbs instead. Another example is when dialing a phone. Back when dialing actually required using an actual dial, the index finger was used most often. Nowadays with cell phones becoming the norm, people are using their thumbs to press buttons instead of dialing with their index fingers.

Wow I hadn't even thought of that before. I know you're not too old, so do you use you thumb or index finger more?
