  • Wow!! Canadian election

As you all know I am a NDP hack. In my quest to get out the SubSpace vote in this coming Canadian Federal election I thought a good way to get you to vote for the NDP would be to have you watch the Conservative Parties campaign ads. Go to www.conservative.ca and click the ads along the right side of the page. They are all terrible. The Ad: Crime, Ad: Taxes, and Ad: Accountability specifically are the worst political ads in the history of the world. I'm not just saying this because I'm a socialist and they are crazy ass far right evangelical christian neo-conservative nut bags. They really seriously are the worst ads in the history for the world. Do yourself a favor and watch them. It's very funny. I'm serious.

ALSO! Click the link "NDP" in my signature and check out the NDP ads. They are very colorful, humorous, and tackle Liberal corruption in a more postive and upbeat tone. They're FABULOUS! Watch now, and vote NDP later! Thats all for now, as I have a DD starting. Wish me luck.

People do not like being told what to do, by Jehovah's Witnesses or by political campaigners, so for the remainder of this thread I predict:

This'll irritate people who want to be left ot make their own mind up, and draw criticism from the people who have decided not to vote for the NDP, and you'll have an argument and carry on voting for whoever you were going to vote for in the first place

I don't think so. The Canadian political climate is in such a heightened state of awareness that only those Canadians who don't follow politics at all would likely be swayed that way.

So you're telling me that the poitical awareness in Canada is so intense that posts on the Trench Wars forums are likely to sway opinions? This may be the case but I strongly doubt it

I predict that the 10-20 Canadians of voting age on these boards will decide the election.

No, I'm not saying that either. What this post does allow for is open discussion and debate, which I thought was encouraged in this forum.

Plus, this gives Americans who were rankled when Canadians were discussing American politics in their last election a chance to do the same to us.

No I'm not disputing that, and you're right I'm actively encouraging debate, I just think that any attempts to change people's voting preference by this method is likely to fail

The part of your first post that I was really disagreeing with was the part about irritating potential voters. I don't see that happening as voters are already irritated by all parties combined, but the NDP itself is getting very little of that attitude compared to the two main contenders. It's more likely that any irritation will be towards inevitable posts by non-Canadians trying to downplay the importance of the election and Canada.

So the best way to get people to vote for the NDP would be to not talk about them at all? That's a great idea, and, coincidently, the same tactics employed by the Green Party (by way of them being too poor to campaign). Oddly enough that's the only party the NDP is beating right now, so, I think I will keep my strategy.

Or! Maybe I am a closet Liberal trying to get people to hate the NDP.

Lets say there were 20 voting age Canadians in this game. If I managed to reach out to them and have them consider voting for the NDP that would actually be pretty damn good. If every NDPer in the country managed to talk to 20 people that would be huge. 20 is a pretty high number for one guy. What do you expect me to do to try to talk to more than 20 people?

I also canvas door to door, wear a pin, and have a sign in my window. Don't mock my efforts! I'm kicking ass. Haha.

Seriously though, all I did was tell people to watch the parties ads. It's a lucky coincidence that my parties ads are better than the others. I didn't say "You have to vote NDP"** I just said look at what the parties are trying to tell you. I am confident that if every Canadian took a long hard look more people would choose my party than currently are.

To summarize.. The NDPs advertising campaigns are very colorful and attractive. They're nicely done. We have a good message. The political and economic climate in the country right now is one of frustration and prosperity respectively. Meaning that we can afford to do a little more (like my party advocates) and that perhaps its time to do just that before Canadians get totally turned off of politics. We have the best leader since Ed Broadbent, and for people who closely watch politics, even conservatives, must admit that Jack Layton and the NDP have been very successful and doing very well lately. The budget for example. If you watch Question Period for example you would know that even during the hight of the sponsorship scandal the NDP kept its questions focused in issues important to them and their supporters (and most Canadians) while the Conservatives and Liberals were satisfied to simply throw barbs back and forth about scandal and people like Grewal (from BC, a former Conservative MP).

**You do have to vote for my party, though, if you want to improve accountability, preserve the environment and enhance health care. If you want to give giant corporations a huge tax break you need to vote for the other guys. Keep this in mind though, the economy is already doing very well here. So maybe that would be a waste of resources. Meanwhile our health care system still suffers from the cut backs of Paul Martin's earlier years. Maybe that's where the money is the needed.
