They examined records from Canadian Atlantic waters spanning the period 1978-1994 - roughly a single generation.

They found that populations of roundnose grenadier, onion-eye grenadier, blue hake, spiny eel and spinytail skate all declined spectacularly over the period.

Populations fell by between 87% and 98%; projections show that some would be completely eliminated within three generations.

I knew that canadian fish stockes had collapsed during this time but it is crazy for them to decline 98% in a generation.

I always seem to be reading scientists warning about overfishing and how current quotas are inadequate to protect the species and yet it never seems radicle action is being taken to ensure this does not happen elsewhere. We always seem to take a very short termed view when it comes to things like this global warming or the consumption off non-renewable resources.

Surely we should be doing more to ensure there are resources for our descendants in 500 years rather than just us or our children.

i just don't understand how people can value money over all else and for everyone just accept how that it is ok to exploit people or the environment ruthlessly to make a quick buck

We always seem to just talk about the situation and never act upon it, just like we're doing now. And after this thread dies, will any of us give any money to any charity, stop eating fish, protest, write a petition or volunteer in some way? I doubt it.

We know we are having an adverse affect on the planet which may lead to decline off our own species and yet the majority don't seem to care enough to do anything about it for the long term benifit of our species. That of course includes myself, not trying to preach as i'm as guilty as the next man.

Back in the sixties, the people would have started HUGE demonstrations already. Forcing the governement and the fishcompanies to do something about it.
Because without consuments, there won't be companies.
So if we'd all start a demonstration it could help ... Thousands of people standing up against the governement. I'm sure those bastards will wake up then. And stop buying fish or so .. The companies would freak out aswell.

Should do something, to show respect to our anchestors .. and follow their example ! -_-

Well .. I must admit it does help, because if you don't give anything, NOTHING at all will get to the charity.
But a few days ago there was a program on TV and it showed how much money doesn't reach its destination .. even inside UNICEF !
So that's harsh ..

general cosmetic surgery
private health care
big companies
individuals having fortunes
owning multiple properties
destruction of the rainforests
boy/girl bands aimed at kids
corruption


and of course anyone who disagrees with me would be sentenced to death via public trebucheting
lets face it i'd have to rule by fear until the people realise i know whats best for them better than they do
