I have a playstation 2, and i know plenty of people who have XBox's and am blown away by the games on the Box.
Playstation 2
Pros:
Playstation2 is outselling the other consoles by a massive margin. That means theres more incentive for developers to make games for it, plus there's very little chance PS2 will sink.
PS2 has the best games in some genres - Pro Evolution Soccer 2 is the best game on Earth, and it's only on PS2
Becuase PS2 is so popular, cross-platform games tend to be developed for it - XBox and Cube versions will not look much better.
PS2's online service launches in March. It looks cool
Cons:
PS2 is beginning to show its age. New PS2 games still look great, but developers are aleady pushing the upper limits of what's possible on the console - Xbox and Cube gameswill be visibly better by next Christmas.
While online gaming is finally arriving on PS2, the console's lack of a hard drive may leave it lagging behind the XBox - it means gamers wont be able to download new levels or new characters etc.
Some of PS2's biggest hitters like Final Fantasy X have been dissapointing in terms of game play innovation - It's just final fantasy VII in fancy clothes. Even gran turismo 3 is guilty on this count.
PS2 has yet to launch a single new game franchise with the WOW factor like Halo.
Game Cube
Pros:
Graphics-wise, cube has been the suprise hit out of the current console crop. Graphics are less sharp-edged and PC-like than XBox, but many Cube games show off vivid, arcade like graphics, far ccrisper than anything on the PS2.
Nintendo's in-house games - super mario, metroid etc are still as naggingly playable as ever, and they won't appear on any other console.
Cons:
While the Cube is getting some big grown up titles such as Resident Evil, and Eternal Darkness - its still fairly thin on some of the most popular game genres for adults. INCLUDING SHOOT EM UPS.
Nintendo still focus on child friendly software. such as Zoocube
With no word of hard drive/online upgrades for Europe, Nintendo isnt looking beyond arcade style gaming.
XBox
Pros:
Games look better than titles on other consoles - games like Halo or splinter cell, cane any competition on Ps2 or Cube.
Online gaming (due march 2003) looks fantastic, shouting through XBox's microphone as you frag away in Unreal will make you either weak from laughter or really angry, depending whether your losing. PS2's service lacks anything to match
XBox is most upgradable of the consoles, the hard drive plus the ethernet means you could bolt on any software upgrades easiy.
Cons:
XBox isnt selling very well. At All.
XBox has nowhere as many games as PS2, and there are some glaring omissions in the sotftware library: nameley a decent RPG, a decent footy games and a decent racer to match Gran Turismo.
XBox is HUGE and so are the controllers.
There arnt quite as many Xbox only games as there are exclusive titles for the PS2 and cube.
------
Im sure theres loads of other opinions of all three consoles out there. But IMHO a fast PC wins every single time. Hands down, No question!
