Given that you are not an authority in the subject, I don't think seeing quite a few curling matches is a basis to hold the opinion that you would be able to get relaly good at it by praccing.

I can watch chess games and claim that since I'm smart if I studied the game hardly then I could become world class, but in reality it doesn't work that way. So I feel your chances of getting anywhere in super G are not inferior to your chances of getting anywhere in curling, except that there are probably more people in super G than in curling.

It's sorta like saying "What's so hard about darts? I can hit basketball shots all the time, I bet if I trained hard for several months I could win the Olympics in darts."

Edit: With the sports that obviously emphasize physical ability, like running, or basketball or boxing, it's pretty obvious to anyone who watches it that they have no chance at all in it. But there are also sports where it's more subtle and you don't really understand how good the practitioners are until you attempt them.

So you first admit that you're not enough of an expert on the matter to give an opinion, and then you offer one anyway? You might as well have begun the post by saying "the following opinion means shit, but I'll give it anyway".

Curling is a bit like go or chess, I agree, but in a way that every time you think you understand the game you see something totally awesome that makes you understand how deep the strategy actually is.

An odd depicition of what one would envision the US as. It was a place where the streets where lined with Gold. Now ppl assume it's McDonald's and KFC. I live in a fairly large US city and I must say that I do not have either a McDonalds or KFC near me. Only place to get that would be to go to a Mall and use the Food Court.

I do know that rather than fast food places on every corner, I would note that there are more Banks than fast food places on most corners.

I am in agreement with ya & would say there are more Starbucks than KFC and McDonalds.

Starbucks a once US held company now has it's world HQ not in Seattle, but in Switzerland with all it's holdings...cannot even call it a US compnay anymore. N. American HQ is still considered Seattle.

As expensive as SBux is..I do not think I have paid for a Venti Latte in over a year.

I am not an authority on the subject, but in my country I am still allowed to voice an opinion.. maybe I'll play it one day, find out it's incredibly difficult and I'll stand corrected, so be it.. I am just putting my opinion in perspective. But it doesn't mean I can't give an opinion just because I didn't study 1729 years on the sport.

                  If that were the case..

Go is so much deeper than chess, I wouldn't compare those two things.

When did I say you aren't allowed to give your opinion? I said nothing of the sort. What I did point out was that you gave your opinion immediately after saying that your opinion wasn't an informed one. That's actually much worse. If you're giving uninformed opinions then the only thing you're doing is showing off your own ignorance. Go ahead and give your opinion on anything and everything. But if you don't know enough about a subject then your opinion means nothing.

Well, being that unlike most people in this thread, I have actually played sports (mostly baseball and American football), for my entire life, I can lend an accurate opinion to this matter. There is a kid at my school named Taylor Mays. He's the number one recruit in the nation for football. He's 6'5, 230 lbs, and runs a 4.2-4.3 40 Yard Dash. He's quite frankly, a freak of nature on the football field. He was all-state on both sides, offensive WR. and Defensive back, and was named the US Army, Defensive player of the year. Basically, he's a stud. I was behind him, as his #2 (in case of injury) at WR. Now, I worked my ass off. I lifted weights often, ran when I didn't need to, and did all the such work involved with trying to better one's self at athletics. Yet, no matter what I did, I still was not able, and will never be able, to run a 4.2 40, or be 6'5, with a giant arm length. I will still never be able to play the game of football better than he can. Why? Not to demean his hard work, but it's because he has a god-given gift of athletic ability. True, he did take that ability and work hard at it to make it better, but the fact of the matter is this: If he had never stepped on a football field before, and I had done the same, he would still beat me. He would beat me, solely because he is naturally gifted in this area of life. No amount of hard work will ever bring me to his realm. If I also had his athletic ability, and worked harder than him, then yes, I do believe that I would be better. But, because he has that upper hand naturally, nothing I do will ever let me surpass him in football.

edit: Basically, what I'm saying is that even though there are athletes that work hard to bring themselves to that upper echelon, those athletes are still more naturally gifted than most. You can't simply work and work and work to make it to the top, you also have to have that natural ability to make it.

Look at galleleo, he's the last person who should be talking about sports, with that kind of body, he can't be good at anything at all. No speed, no power.
