  • Travelling through america

as some of you know Ive always wanted to do a Jack Kerouac kind of trip through USA with some friends but it has never been off due to various reasons. Now however me and a couple of friends are finally seriously considering going to usa and staying there for 2-6 months just cruising and exploring and having a good time. In the past the obvious choice of transportation for euros going to america on trips like this has always been to buy a car on the east side and travel over to the west side where you sell or dump it and then fly home. My cousins have done that for example..
This isnt so obvious to us tho cos only two of us have drivers license which might be both risky and boring. I hear that nowadays flying is really cheap within the usa borders but is this true and if so, how much does it cost? and what about train? How much does it really cost to buy a decent car?
Im not really a fan of flying cos we will miss the true feeling of being "on the road" but if its both cheaper and safer its something we must seriously consider..

there is also another question Id like to ask you guys. USA is so big and present all the time that I cant really figure out what we should do or where we should go so Id like some help with that part! Of course we are not gonna follow some scheduled route but it would be good to have some major goals, specially since usa is so big O_o
Where would you recommend us to go? are there some places that really serves the purpose of this trip better than others, are there some stuff we just *have* to see, some cities we just *have* to visit etc.. Is it worth the time and effort to go all the way up to Canada for example? what do you think? Id really appreciate your help
The main point of the trip is obviously not to see monuments and stuff like that (altho some might be fun) but more about meeting people and see what the americans are like and hopefully improve the rather negative standard european image we have about america and americans these days. We wanna have fun but also learn stuff about the culture and average daylife, improve ourselves as human beings and bla bla bla.. you know the deal

      Yea, definitely rent a car.

We don't have too many trains here, unless you want to tour rural America.

As for planes, I wouldn't do that. Airports are such a hassle, security is so tight, and I don't really think it's all that cheap.

You definitely need to visit New York and Washington DC. Check out Mount Rushmore in South Dakota, Yellowstone, the Rockies, and the Sequoias in Californa. That pretty much takes you across the whole country.

Make sure you get the insurance too so you can really stick it to them when you totally fuck the car on purpose.

well youd be taking a risk but buying a cheap used car would actually probably be the cheapest way to do it, youre right. at some point i heard that amtrak (our mediocre train service) offered some plans but all i can find is this one http://www.amtrak.com/servlet/Conten...73945&ssid=296 and it doesnt seem really all that cheap.

you should take this trip during a period that includes the summer and fall, as the northern parts of the country blow during cold months but are gorgeous in the summer, and the entire northeast is much prettier in the fall.

places i have been in the us for a fairly extended period of time and my perspective:

southern california: for an all-out, full-blown "american" experience, you cant beat southern california. the people are rude and superficial, and the stuff is bright, shiny, and beautiful. from san diego to los angeles and the beaches inbetween, i think this area is worth doing.

minnesota and wisconsin: minneapolis is incredible during the summer months, but if you cant make it there during the summer i bet its not worth it really. however, as far as meeting nice friendly people are concerned, these two states are where its at (the added benefit is that these people arent all friendly because they are bible-beating crazies, some of them actually have a sane political opinion and are nice anyway)

new orleans, louisiana: music and culture (at least formally) that are incredibly unique combined with a pretty crazy party atmosphere, i havent been since the hurricane (although im going for a few days starting friday) but at least pre-hurricane, definitely worth a visit. some of the people are really nice, and some are just nuts.

asheville, nc: if you want to meet some nice people, there are tons of them in asheville, both the friendly southern kind and the laid-back marijuana smoking kind. beautiful wilderness and places to hike, as well.

washington, dc: everyone here is a huge asshole but theres a lot of historical stuff to see, probably worth it if youre even remotely in the area

anyone have any perspective on how southern and midwestern people treat foreigners? i think that might be useful. on one hand, for a white dude with no accent, i find that conservative people are extremely friendly on a surface level, considerably more so than their more liberal counterparts. however, i know they arent so nice to colored dudes in general. how do they treat a white dude with a foreign accent?

i find what youll expect in general visiting this country is at bars, parties, etc, where socializing is expected, youll find people are extremely nice to you. trying to ask someone for help or advice or perspective wandering around on the street you might be disappointed. then again since i havent been to sweden i dont know what your standards are like.

If you don't visit New York, Chicago, Boston, or L.A... you're wasting your time coming to America.

The people out in the country areas of the Midwest might be a little less willing to help someone, though I don't see them being dickheads. City people are usually pretty carefree about things as long as they aren't in a hurry.

On the contrary, I find liberal people to be more relaxed and cool about things than conservatives. Then again, I'm from Ohio.
