You're right, he's wrong.
Dictionaries don't approve of using the "I" in that way, because it's just an oral mistake that hasn't been corrected. Nowadays however, it's accepted and shouldn't matter on which one you add.

your friend is wrong. The best way to remember the rule is to take out the word "and" and one of the people. So you can rewrite the sentence as:
"and then it got serious for me"
and
"and then it got serious for dr.cox"
in your friend's case, "and then it got serious for I" just sounds wrong.TelCat> i am a slut not a hoe
