    please help me (grammar related)

    ok my friend and i got in a fight about grammar:

    he says it's "and then it got serious for dr. cox and i"
    i say it's "and then it got serious for dr. cox and me"

    i know in my heart that i am right. i just cant prove it. i need a link or something.

            IIRC a good way to tell which word to use in a sentence like that is to take "Dr. Cox and" out of it and then see which one makes sense. I could be wrong though.

                        Your friend's wrong.

                        'I' and 'me' just follow the same rules as 'he' and 'him', or 'she' and 'her' etc. It depends on whether the person is the object (of the verb) or the subject (of the verb).

                        I (object) like him (subject)
                        She (object) likes me (subject)
                        I (object) like her (subject)

                        In your case you're the subject, so it's me.

                        "and then it got serious for me"
                        "and then it got serious for me and dr. cox"
                        "and then it got serious for dr. cox and me"

                        No problem with any of these, I think.

                        You'd use 'I' if it was "dr. cox and I got serious...", as you'd be the object not the subject.

                        Not that it really matters.

                          Maybe it's different in Britain but I'd switch the object and subject labels in all of those.

                            Yeah, I think those were reversed. The subject is the noun phrase that's "performing" the action of the verb while the object is the one that the verb is being performed on. All sentences should have a subject, or at least have an implied subject.
