  • Sony Conference at E3 2006

Well I just watched the live coverage of the Sony conference at E3, at gamespots website, and I must say that i was quite impressed.
They FINALLY confirmed the price and release date, which is scheduled to come out on November 17, 2006 in North America/Europe. For the price:

    20gb HD - $499 US / $549 CAD
    60gb HD - $599 US / $659 CAD

Yes it will be expensive, but considering Blu-Ray players (the new format for movies and games) will cost over $1000, this is a good price.

They have also revealed the new controller for the Playstation 3. They have scrapped the boomerang design, and decided to recreate the same old playstation 2 controller - with a twist. It will have some sort of gyro system implemented into it, or as Phil Harrison described, 6 degrees of freedom, which will allow you to control some of the movement just by moving the controller. At first I was like "WTF a Nintendo Wii ripoff?". It's not necessarily ripping them off 100%. Unlike the Wii remote controller, it doesnt have an infrared sensor. Btw Nintendo wasn't the one that came up with motion sensor.

Of course, what good is the conference without showing off gameplay footages? They showed a number of new titles, as well as new trailers for some of the titles they showed in E3 2005. They even showed someone actually playing some of these games, such as Heavenly Sword, and Resistance: Fall of Man. They also mentioned that there would be playable demos for people to try out after the conference was over.

Some highlights of the conference for me are as follows:
-The actual gameplay demo some guy was playing of Heavenly Sword looked amazing. It reminded me of God of War in many ways, such as different ways of killing your enemies, and the insane combos. Near the end of this demonstration, the last enemy the guy was facing had a sequence of buttons you had to push in order to defeat him, just like God of War. All in all, this game looked beautiful, fluid and Im looking forward to it.

-Final Fantasy XIII. Can't really judge by the trailer on how the combat system will be like. From what they showed, the main character is a girl, infiltrated a train full of bad guys, and used some sort of Stop magic to get away from them. Square-Enix mentioned that there were TWO Final Fantasy games coming to the PS3. They are Final Fantasy XIII, and Final Fantasy vs XIII. All I know is that there are two different teams working on these titles. The team that made Kingdom Hearts is working on Final Fantasy vs XIII.

-Metal Gear Solid. This trailer blew me away. The trailer made it seem like it was taking place after the game. Snake is telling a story of what was happening in the war, can't remember exactly what, I have to watch it again. They showed the characters that were going to be in the game with the beautiful graphics, such as Meryl, Roy Campbell, Revolver Ocelot, Otacon, and Raiden. Raiden looks like he's taken the form of a ninja, much like Grey Fox. In the end of the trailer, Snake mentions that he must do one final thing. He loads up his gun, and points it in his mouth.

Well, thats pretty much most of the things I enjoyed about this press conference, and this is only the 1st day! E3 officially starts on wednesday. Nintendo Wii and Microsoft XBOX 360 conferences begin tomorrow. You can stream it live on gamespot's website.

I'd be interested to know how far back Sony was looking at implementing a gyro, because yeah, it seems like they ripped off Nintendo.

Seems kind of stupid to have the 20gb pricetag, when for only 100 bucks more you get 3 times the amount of space.
My father in law was telling me over Thanksgiving about this amazing bartender at some bar he frequented who could shake a martini and fill it to the rim with no leftovers and he thought it was the coolest thing he'd ever seen. I then proceeded to his home bar and made four martinis in one shaker with unfamiliar glassware and a non standard shaker and did the same thing. From that moment forward I knew he had no compunction about my cock ever being in his daughter's mouth.

Nintendo invested in a motion-sensing wireless input controller company back in 2001. Link.

I'm sorry, the PS3 is too expensive. And the controller is an obvious last minute hack job. The PS3 seems to be dead before it even got started, at least from my view.

From what I've read, it's not really a motion sensor so much as it's a tilt sensor. There's a big difference between the two. The Wii will have tilt sensing but full motion sensing as well. The difference is like being able to tilt your head to look around you, and being able to walk around to get a better viewing angle. The PS3 controller won't, for example, be swung in the air to simulate a swing of a sword. It would however be able to rotate around like a steering wheel in a driving game. The Wii will also allow for more precise pointing which would lend itself well to first-person shooting games.

Nintendo already has used gyroscopes to create Gameboy games with tilt sensing capability, so the PS3 is more like those rather than the Wii and its motion-sensing controller.

I do like the idea of having the controllers be wireless but with a USB port for presumably wired control as well as for charging. I'm not so sure about the decision to remove the rumble feature however.

I think they picked those two pricepoints so they can get away with saying "The new PS3 is under $500," while the majority of consumers will be motivated to buy the $600 version for the reason you mentioned.

Regarding what Money said, what kind of features does it offer? Please tell me it's at least a DVR that you can easily upload programs to your PC.

I'd hope there would be another way..like some automatic system that fills them itself after every post.

                              Some corrections
                              a) It was only one game, Kirby's Tilt 'n' Tumble.
                              b) Gameboy Color only, well GBA too, but not SP.
                              c) Halken was the one who did it. You can't really say it was Nintendo even though the guy who was running Halken at the time that game was released is now the guy who is running Nintendo.

                              The more you know.
