People tend not to knock Kirby out of the arena when he's a solid fucking rock.

Do you even know how to grab and throw a character? Doesn't matter if you're a rock, you only need to grab and throw it, and with Sheik, I can down+throw and combo the little fucker and end it with a forward+a in air to send it to hell.

Tell me how it helps to be a rock again? And the downwards attack where he turns into a stone is predictable, you get several seconds to block it.

Kirby

As I said, Kirby is one of the weakest characters that can be knocked out fast. Around 80% and a strong attack can send him out of screen.

Newbie: BUT HE CAN JUMp 6 TIMES + FINAL CUTTER!!!

Who the hell cares how many times he can jump when he gets hit out of screen early game. Oh, and the jumps are the only good thing with Kirby.

Not to mention that he got a short reach, which means he has to go close in to hit, and he's neither fast or strong.

The only useful thing he got in melee combat that is useful is the ability to duck down low, but I guess none of you noticed.

Newbie: BUT OMG! HE KN*OWS HOW TO SUCK IN PPL AND STEAL SWESOME ABILITIES!

And? Most of the abilities you get are projectile attacks that don't do a shit, and the other ones aren't good either.

Newbie: DONT FORGET THE AWESOME ROCK ATTACK FOM AIR!

Which gives the opponent several seconds to block it, then get a free throw at the fucker?

Yoshi

Yoshi without a good third jump is as good as dead when he's knocked outisde. Decent first jump, a big second jump where he floats a little, and nothing else, useless.

He can hit hard, but he's useless in melee due to slow speed and useless attacks.

The downwards attack in air is a little better than Kirby's cause he doesn't turn into stone, but it can be easily blocked and countered.

Yoshi may be a bit heavy to knock out, but when it happens, he's dead.

Sheik

One of the fastest characters in the game. Fast attacks with fast recovery time which doesn't leave her open.

And the aerial forward+A being one of the best knockback/finishing moves in the game. Awesome aerial fighter.

Jumps high, with an awesome third jump which is also useful in battles.

The only bad thing is weak attacks, but who cares when she outspeeds anyone and can rack up damage easily. The finishing moves are strong, so the weak attacks doesn't matter.

And she's bad at fighting multiple opponents too, but that isn't a big problem.

A good Kirby user is one that has mastered the ability to do aerial combos, but I'm sure none of you even know how to do it.

I've played the N64 version, and several characters were WAY overpowered in that game, Ness and Pikachu were gods. Lots of flaws in that game. Melee fixed all of it.

Captain Falcon got lots of speed, but it hurts him more than it helps him. The good players use Gannondorf over Captain Falcon cause of the awesome power. But you wouldn't know, you're just a newbie.

Liquid, ever sucked someone up with Kirby and then walked off the edge of the platform? Makes for a good time.

I really took a liking to the Ice Climbers as well, can't explain why.

The best thing I liked about SSB was the ability to go in and change the items that dropped and how frequently it did, making everyone tiny and quick or huge and metal was pretty awesome.

I skipped much of the back and forth drama. I think a lot of you, ratty... included, are really just picking your favorite characters and trying to justify them as being the best, but in reality SSB 64 (and I don't hear great stories about melee either) was the furthest thing from balanced you could find on N64 (next to Goldeneye, oddjob anyone? And Mario cart, Toad was slightly faster than even the lightweights, which gave anyon decent a big advantage). I've played many a SSB 64 in my day, and let me tell you, anyone that tells you that Yoshi is the best is a) talking out of their ass because yoshi is one of their favorite characters or b) has had a lot of success with yoshi against players he/she thinks are good (but aren't).

Yoshi has a couple of very powerful A moves that can't be ignored, but if one uses his B moves against a semi-decent player that knows how to dodge and place him/herself. His A moves are however awkward, even if you play with him a lot, and slow. He has one good juggle move, but it hits them too high initially to be of good use. He's slow as molasses, as I'd put him close to on par with someone like Link (but doesn't have the reach or damage of Link). His reach is mediocre, and that's good for closecombat, but against a speedster like fox or falcon (in the right hands of course) he's an absolute joke.

From what I know, pikachu, fox and ness were EXTREMELY overpowered in the 64 game. I remember when I first started playing, everyone would play their yoshi and kirby and do their little down bs and sometimes get lucky... but as people start to get a bit better they realize that those are the clumsiest and most easily dodgeble moves in the game and then move on to either faster or more accurate characters using almost solely A moves (unless you're fox and can pull of reflector shield juggles).
