I have a glaring example of US law gone bad across the street, as well.

There's a place we used to stop by up until the fourth grade, to buy candy and soda and stuff after school. One weekend, some guy was trying to break in on the roof, and he fell off and broke his leg.

He sued and won the case, and was awarded like a hundred grand and Shaver's (the name of the place) had to shut down. They're back now, not as a small store but as a crawfish-boiling place. A quick walk over and about twelve bucks will get you a ton of boiled crawfish, and some potatoes and corn to boot.

But seriously. A bandit got rich for trying to break in. Wtf?

When I was a wee little tot, we used to race underneath the bleachers at the football field... I cracked my head on one of the metal cross bars underneath it, and I had to get 8 staples in my head.

And I had to get stiches in my forehead when I fell off the tire swing in the winter time, because my mittens didn't have a good grip on the chains.

They made two school rules- Elementary kids aren't allowed on the twirly swing and no one was allowed behind the bleachers during football games. I feel special.

I've broken my left collarbone 3 time while playing ice hockey and my pinky once while playing basketball. Both those sports should be banned for being dangerous.

The school installed a piece of equipment without following basic safety procedures, and my fucking arm got busted because of it. A lawsuit would not have been inappropriate.

But as far as tag and tetherball...yea. That's a little over the top.
That is exactly why you have that story right now.. you guys sue people over fucking everything. And you wonder why your country goes to the shitter? Most people are scared to do anything because they might get sued over it. Falling down, bruising stuff, sometimes even breaking stuff is part of the childhood. Kids fall and get back up, they learn from it. Don't sue school because their kid fell of a swing, teach your kid how to properly swing. I would have been a frikken millionaire by now if I sued everytime someone else got me injured.

                i do agree there's a difference between
                1) hurting yourself and
                2) hurting yourself because equipment was poorly installed

however, i do agree that things often go too far. for example, a recent compensation advert in the UK has featured a guy receiving a fortune for spilling a bucket of hot tar on his own arm, and another for tripping on a bit of wood that shouldn't have been there - on a building site

My opinion is that you never get hurt, you never learn and you end up weaker than a sponge.

I have a friend, her name is Holly, and Hollys parents always went out of there way to make sure she never hurt herself. They wouldn't let her near things like the stove, or anywhere in the kitchen. They'd pick her up and bring her down steps, rather than risk her falling. They baby'd her, way into adulthood.

Holly is currently afraid of everything and the whinest and least mature adult I have ever known. She has the psyche of a 6 year old. The slightest scratch will send her into tears, shes afraid of the dark, afraid of being alone.

My parents didn't do that to me, I've broken a lot of bones, I've smashed myself up pretty hard and needless to say i'm not afraid of the dark. If you don't let your kids get hurt, they develop phobias about being hurt. I'm not telling you to push your kid down the stairs, but when he's doing somethign stupid thats not life threatening, let him get hurt, so he'll learn.

i bet anybody here who ever touched a hot burner never touched it again.

we don't be such douche bags about everything, and we let kids run around and get the bumps and bruises associated with that part of their lives.

which 99% of people do, and when there's a news story about the other 1% it's like OH NO THE COUNTRY IS DOOOOOMED

in a free country, the fact that people are stupid and make terrible decisions about their childrens' upbringing is OK

that might be a counterintuitive thought to process, but it actually is OK.

I'm not disagreeing with you. My only problem is this: When those stupid parents' overprotection exceeds the limits of their own child, and begins to negatively affect all of the children at such and such school. Should those kids really not be allowed to be....kids, because some uppity, overprotective mom had a shit fit that littl billy broke his arm on the jungle gym? No. Getting hurt is one of the natural discourses of being a kid. I had my fair share of skinned knees and big bruises, yet I somehow made it 18 years.
