Studying Abroad

I was wondering if anyone had studied abroad, where and what kind of problems you had (legal, cultural, STD's, etc).

I've been considering taking a semester in Mexico to study Spanish at an immersion school and get foreign language credits at the same time. So, I'd appreciate any suggestions you have for staying out of jail or getting kidnapped by a drug cartel.
