I think it's kinda on par with The Matrix script-wise, and they're both similar in their messages. The way I interpreted it, Neo is more of a Messianic figure, whereas I think the Jack/Tyler Durden character is more of a Buddha figure. But both films spend a lot of time focusing on the philosophical messages of Christianity/Buddhism---life is illusory and full of suffering, and the true path to enlightenment/salvation begins by letting go of one's desire for constant comfort and the pleasures of the material world.
Interesting message, because it is completely counter-culture to contemporary American pop culture.
