Im not too knowledable on this stuff so im just saying what i think i know:
The middle east has not really been stable for a long time. Between 1914 and 1989 there was also conflicts going on with the western world, with ww1 ww2 and the cold war, but since the ending of the cold war, most of the world superpowers are at peace, if not friends. Today you got Japan france UK America Canada Russia CHina Austrailia Germany Italy ETC all working together for peace, and it is the middle east which seems to be again, unstable, like europe in ww2. Hopefully this time, though it looks to be going in the other direction, there will not be a full scale war. Even if this happens, the world learned the power of the nuclear bomb in ww2, and unless they want utter chaos, will not use another. Half the countries that possess nukes have agreed to never use them.
A war in the middle east at this point seems very real and possible, but a world war seems very unreal, with, as mentioned above, most countries on the same side, and pro-peace, anti-war.
