  • Brits, check your bins for spy tags!

    http://www.mailonsunday.co.uk/pages/...&icc=NEWS&ct=5

Electronic spy 'bugs' have been secretly planted in hundreds of thousands of household wheelie bins.

The gadgets - mostly installed by companies based in Germany - transmit information about the contents of the bins to a central database which then keeps records on the waste disposal habits of each individual address.

Already some 500,000 bins in council districts across England have been fitted with the bugs - with nearly all areas expected to follow suit within the next couple of years.

Until now, the majority of bins have been altered without the knowledge of their owners. In many cases, councils which ordered the installation of the devices did not even debate the proposals publicly.
What's the world coming too Just checked mine, seems clean.

That's fucking disturbing, if it's true. People's garbage contains pretty much the history and daily schedule of any given household.

And who keeps the info? And who can buy the info? Most importantly, what the fuck is it used for?

            lemme get this straight...

they install a tiny device the size of a penny, and suddenly a company miles away knows how many condoms and dirty depends you throw away?

i'm not suggesting that technology like this couldn't exist, just that it doesnt exist today, and won't for a long time.

at most they might track how many times the lid is opened and closed, and possibly the presence of magnetic metals.
a bit more actual info from these articles would be appreciated, instead they just try and scare people.

besides, if i were the garbage companies, i'd do the scanning as the trash went into the truck. :fear:

As far as I know, when the bin is emptied on the truck it is weighed and the information is sent to some sort of box in the front of the truck, which is then taken to the dump and uploaded to some sort of database. The council can then use this to see who's recycling more and stuff. However, 'experts' believe that in the future it would be possible for the council to charge per tonne of waste on top of the original council tax. Furthermore, if a criminal were to hack into this database it would be easy for them to see if the occupants of a house were on holiday that week.

As opposed to just walking down the street and seeing which house didn't put their garbage out?

The clever people get a friend to put their bin out for them, now they'll have to fill them too.

                  EDIT: Clever ... or paranoid?

If I thought they were placed there to spy on our eating habits, then maybe.

But I do know for a fact they exist and that they aid in weighing our bins.

they can do what they want

                        the council owns the bins
my council gives us 3 wheely bins and a kerbie box
                        http://www.newtownabbey.gov.uk/recycling/

also waste disposal is a big problem, however charging per weight would increase illegal dumping :/ though on the whole it would increase recycling ^^

at the moment its probably more to gather information to see how they can tackle the problem and build up statistics on peoples waste habits, i.e. the weight off rubish of a family with 4 kids vs a single person with none etc ...

its a problem that needs to be tackled.

                        EDIT: fixed broken link

Skepticism acknowledged and appreciated. However, when you include the increasing trend of embedding RFID tags into mainstream product packaging and the increasingly smaller size requirements for data recording devices---it really doesn't strike me as some tinfoil-hat, sci-fi, y3k type-shit.
