So if you live in the UK, you can go to jail for 3 years for trolling. And the US is supposed to be a place of eroding civil liberties?

A man who posted racist messages on a website in memory of murdered black teenager Anthony Walker was jailed for more than three years today.

Neil Martin, 30, emailed at least six comments to the website - less than a week after Anthony was killed with an ice axe in a racist attack in Huyton, Merseyside, last year.

The site was set up by a school friend of the 18-year-old. Posting under the pseudonym Genuine Scouser, Martin suggested that white people should celebrate the murder, that Anthony's family should be burned and made references to slavery and a "banana boat".

Edit: Scratch that "making indecent photographs of children". Fuck him. As for the whole case of the internet being anonymous, it isn't. If someone is organizing or promoting the attack and death of a person(s) using the internet, racially based or not, they've given up their right to have access to it and their right to privately conduct their business.

legally i see no difference between this and mail threats, phone call threats.what? just because its on the internet we have free raine to do whatever we want to anyone. it wasnt as simple as trolling, he made personal threats against the family, in whatever medium thats in j=t, that still stands up as assualt. as clear as if he had thrown a brick through their window. im glad the judges had the foresight to realise this. in a world where the internet in becoming the main communication device why shouldnt we protect people? just because they are typed words doesnt mean they cant hurt or be threatening.

as i said the medium doesnt matter, id compare it to holding a peaceful memorial in a park and some guy with a blowhorn coming over and screaming racial slurs down it.(bah bah social impact thoery). why should a broadband connection protect you?

woo im on the internet lets type whatever i want to anyone regardless of my moral responsibility as there are no chance of repercussions.

it wasnt just trolling , it was a clear act of malice. and if it stops one 13 yearold from canada being a wanker to someone for no reason, then yah!! win for us? as the internet with its anonmity, is a cesspool.

does he deserve time? yes OAPA (1861), was his sentance to harsh, yes but our judges call it as they see it, and this act of assault coupled with the child porn, probally pinced someones nerve.

im sorry we sort out our problems instead of having mini-fred phelps' running around hiding behind a clearly ineffective document.

im not suggesting anything like net police (country to country law conflictions), but assualt is more than just person to person interaction, it can be phones, mail, texts, signs, why not email?

erosion of civil liberities i think not, protection of a family in grief and the curving of anti-social behavior *thumbs up*.

im normally yay free speech, but its not as black and white as you americans paint it to be, and to think it is, is utterly foolish.

I missed the part about the child pron on the PC, but the article said it was only 6 months for that and 2 1/2 years for the troll emails.

Suz, I am pretty tired so I admit to not having read it pretty well. I didn't catch the part about the threats. I don't think this article was very well written...there's really nothing specific to indicate really how bad it was what he said.

But he definitely deserved a lifetime ban from the server.
