It's not an issue of whether or not the death penalty fits the crime, because to our standards, it obviously does.

The fact of the matter is that Saddam is still a very powerful figure in Iraq, and sentencing him to death might cause more problems than it solves.

Personally, I'd have him stay alive to see the "new" Iraq, if it ever comes.
