I have family up in Alaska who have a black lab. Whenever they leave he just sits in his kennel and they fill up this thing called a kong (i no rite) up with peanut butter and he occupies himself for hours trying to get it all out.

They have great reputations as snow and water dogs, which is important to me.

Like galle said, it's important that you have time to train your dog first. Most dogs are very well capable of staying home alone but if you don't train them properly they can become a real problem.
You have to be sure it won't bark all day (at least if you got neighbors) or start to eat stuff. Whenever our dog is alone it will just sleep all day.

My parents run a Labrador Retriever kennel on the side. Anyways, I have a labrador and she's an attention whore, but she can be alone for quite awhile just fine, but there is another dog to keep her company, a mini pinscher. So that probably has something to do with it, but I recommend at the very least a few chew toys are there for the dog to chew around, dogs chew stuff when they're bored, especially when they're younger. Obviously you have to help the dog make the choice of what is and isn't alright to chew. 40 or 50 hours a week of work should be fine, but I guess it depends how many hours a day you work.

Yea when I move out on my own I also plan to get a dog, I've always wanted one since I was little. To be honest I really don't even care what kind all that much, and Labs look cool as shit so best of luck with you getting one or two.

This might seem weird, but you should consider getting two dogs instead of one... they keep each other company.

I have always loved dogs. But until now, I never was mature enough, or financially responsible enough to want to own one. But I know how emotionally needy dogs are, and I am trying to research if it would be ethical for someone with my lifestyle to get one. I usually work about 40-50 hours a week, and I live alone---and I don't expect either of those two things to change.

Does anyone have any experience with dog psychology or know what a dog's social needs are? Is it ethical to leave a dog unattended for about 1/3 of the day, about 5-6 days out of the week?

That's the down side of dogs & having pets.
Dogs average about 15 years. Ours is almost half way there. My heart's gonna shatter when that day comes. Then I'm gonna get another Rotty.

Rottweilers are the best dogs all around.
Smart, loyal, playful, protective & independant & intimidating to outsiders.
Get one as a puppy, keep it in a small cage kennel while you work & to assist in housebreaking, give it only 'dog toys' to play with & take it out when you wake up, finish work & before going to bed.
