  • 5 Modern Movie Classics

    So, I just finished writing about 20 pages of essays for my cinema class, on the topic of 5 movies made after 1985, which I would deem Masterpieces. They could be of any national origin, and any complexion (IE Documentary, Avant-Garde etc. etc.). The only catch was that one had to be made after 2004. I chose:

    Do the Right Thing
    Pulp Fiction
    City of God
    Schindler's List
    and The Departed (my choice for post-2004)

    So, my question is, given the same choice what would you choose, and if you want, why? Or, just debate my movies and why they should or shouldn't be up there. Point is, I'm a little burned out from writing, and up to have some discussion about my favorite topic....MOVIES!

    Discuss away.

      Trainspotting;
      C.R.A.Z.Y.;
      Oldboy;
      Perfume: The Story of a Murderer (2006);
      Fight Club.

      I didn't say why I chose those movies, simply because I couldn't. If I wanted to write something relevant, I would have to watch the said movies then comment on them right after. If I would have tried to write something without having watched them recently, it wouldn't be too convincing and it would probably sound stupid, so I prefer restraining myself from writing the reasons why I chose those movies.

      By the way, I didn't see the Departed yet, but I watched Infernal Affairs. Did you watch both of them? If so, is the Departed any different from Infernal Affairs, or is it just a remake with different actors?

        Trainspotting;
        Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels / Snatch.;
        Oldboy;
        Perfume: The Story of a Murderer (2006);
        Fight Club.

        I'll edit my list later if I find remember of any other movies that would be more appropriate, and I'll say why I chose those movies.

        Gah! I forgot all about Oldboy.

        Anyways, I've seen both Infernal Affairs and the Departed, and I prefered the Departed. Usually, I love asian movies, because I enjoy the unique craft that the filmmakers over there possess, but I had a hard time enjoying it. Maybe if I watched it again, I'd like it better, but the Departed stood out immediately. Everything in the film was meticulous, and it reminded me of why my fave. director used to be Marty Scorcese.

        edit: I also forgot about American Beauty

                      Clerks and Clerks 2.

                      The original is the best, though.

                          If you're talking about 5 movies that really made me personally stop and think differently about the world:

                          The Matrix
                          Fight Club
                          Pulp Fiction
                          Saving Private Ryan
                          Lord of the Rings (Fellowship)

                          Post 2004? Don't know if I can even pick one for that. I thought the Prestige was pretty awesome.

                          Two others that I'm really fond of are The Big Lebowski and Boondock Saints. Granted, neither will really be considered a "classic" but I personally think they're really solid movies.

                              Forrest Gump

                              After 2004 is hard, lemme check...

                              hmm I think: Eternal sunshine of the Spotless Mind

                              I'm sure there are better choices, but from what I've watched those are my personal favourites... Although I liked Star Wars a lot when I first watched it, but it's kinda ruined for me cause my brother watched all of em like 50 times, same is going for LOTR...
