.002 cents != .002 dollars

This guy was quoted over and over again .002 cents/KB, yet Verizon charged him .002 dollars/KB. The Verizon folks keep typing into their calculator .002 x 35800 (I don't recall the exact number of KB) and end up getting 71.6, which they interpret as 71 dollars and 60 cents.

It should be .716 dollars.

Here's an audio recording of him talking to Verizon trying to explain the difference. Even if the rate is supposed to be .002 dollars/KB (despite the fact they keep telling him cents), it's funny and frustrating as hell listening to this recording.

I wonder how Verizon is going to handle this. I heard it's been slashdotted, and I don't really think they need the bad publicity over $71, considering this is going viral.

But I worked in the call center industry for a few years and have a friend who works for Verizon. Considering it's the type of job you can make a decent wage without a college degree, it's no suprise how many math retarded people you will have trying to help you.

However, having a floor manager (like the one who handled the 3rd escalation) who doesn't understand the difference between $.002 and $.00002 seems totally unusual to me. Most people in that position have degrees and understand basic math concepts like this.

I wonder if it's an internal policy to play dumb on this, because they think most people are just going to roll over and take it up the ass instead of fighting them on it.
