Er... Iran has legitimate geo-political reasons to antagonize the US. They have been trying to be the dominant power in the middle east for quite some time now. With the elimination of Saddam Hussein and Iraq which was their greatest enemy, Iran has been exerting it's influence more and more in the region. From funding Hezbollah's war in Lebanon last summer, to funding and supplying forces hostile to the Americans in Iraq, Iran has tried it's best to get more power in the region.

They know that the Americans and the Brits aren't going to declare war on their country, and they have also seen how the world has played out. For instance, North Korea has been steadily developing nuclear weapons and has successfully done so even with US sanctions and world condemation. Meanwhile Iraq which was only in the first stages and never really had any WMD got destroyed. Obviously this shows that if you have the power, you won't be touched. That is why Iran is proceeding no matter what. It is to defend themselves. Not to mention the same reason why any country would try and get nuclear weapons... so that the 'superpowers' won't be able to push them around. I highly doubt Iran really wants to attack anyone with them.

It is interesting to note that as the dominant power in terms of population, and if they had nuclear weapons, then dominant military power next to Israel, Iran would become the natural leader of the middle east. What stops them is history. The Iranians are not arab and they are also Shiites while most of the rest of the middle east (with the exception of 60% of Iraq) are Sunni. BUT with their support of anti-Israel and anti-American efforts, the Iranians do hope to win hearts and minds in the middle east. For instance, Syria follows them, and Hezbollah is supplied by them. It would not be a stretch to say that this is part of their propaganda.

Do Iranians really believe the holocaust didn't exist? I don't think that's really the issue. They have consistently used their disbelief of the holocaust as a way of saying get the Jews out of Palestine. Their argument is 'even if the holocaust did happen, why are the Jews in Palestine and not in Europe then? Therefore it must be fake, and you are all liars'. Most educated people would know better, but there are tons of uneducated masses where such lies could be believed, and with Iran advocating them, yet again they win a PR war.

As to this particular situation we cannot know for sure what really happened. Maybe the British really were spying on Iran by going into their waters. Maybe the Iranian soldiers just made a mistake. Maybe they were taking them hostage because this is a 'disputed area' and thus they just want to show their muscle while they know they won't get any more real punishments for it.

Either way, I highly doubt this is all 'for entertainment' as TK seems to think so.

There are so many articles/links on this subject. It's not just kids that are being effected by this. The US and UK military are seeing, as well as denying that this is having an effect on the troops. If you do not care about that, it really doesn't bother me, but if you should serve over there one day and be in contact with such radioactive material don't go bitchin at the government that you hold so high in morals and for your personal care. You may be a lucky one and get to spend time in our well equipted VA hospitals. We all know how well our government we fight for takes care of our Vets when they return!

Maybe one day you too can become a statistic?
