If some kid hears constantly "if you drink and drive, you will kill like 80 people, definitely, you're a fucking murderer, douchebag" (which is how the PSAs come across, pretty much) he's going to feel lied to the first time he drives (responsibly, not at 110 miles per hour) at like .10% and finds he can drive perfectly safely.

What kids do you know, drive perfectly fine after they drink? Hell, most of the teenagers I know are dumbasses, and the ones that aren't, wouldn't decide to get in a car if they've been drinking. The dumbasses I just mentioned? Yea, they wouldn't stop at "10%", and that's where you seem to be mixing up. If they are driving to a party knowing they're going to drink, or decide while they're at some place that they're going to drink, they won't stop when they've had "one or two beers". These fuck heads will get good and toasty, to the point where everything is funny and the vision becomes sloshy- and they'll still think that they are ok to drive. And that's what I'm talking about. You know why the ads are like that? Because teenagers are idiots. It's true. Kids are fucking retarded, and they think bad shit won't happen to them until it does. This is why they won't stop at "10%", because they've already decided they'll be good to drive regardless.

The people you're thinking of that stop at one beer or so? Probably someone over the age of 21, where the "danger" and "cool factor" of drinking has worn off. The majority of the accidents come from kids who shouldn't have been drinking in the first place, but did so because it's cool to drink at that age, because they "know they're own limits" (at 17, amirite) and they drive "perfectly safely". Hell one idiot in my junior year math class complained about a reckless ticket he got for going 75 through a residential (25 mph) and this fucker was sober at that time. Kids are fucking morons, and they need ads like that to help stave off the stupid mistakes they're going to make.

The ads say "smoking pot is awful, the only reason people offer you pot is because they feel guilty about their terrible habit yada yada."

I've never head a commercial like that and didn't even get offered my first joint until I was in 10th grade. When you're in a situation when someone offers you some weed (unless you're a dumbass) you'll be able to know why they're offering you some- alot of the time it's manners and they don't want to seem like stingy dicks.

Face, I think the point is, if you just say 'people should judge for themselves if they are okay or not', then we are at exactly the situation we are now... except worse. If people are already going to drink and drive even though it's against the law and kill thousands of people a year, perhaps you should understand that 'people' in general are pretty bad at judging their own competence. Fine, YOU may be able to, but the general public, there are enough idiots out there who don't know any better.

If you just leave it to them to decide for themselves, people will do whatever they want.

So what if the limits are made so that in many times it's only applicable for the cheapest drunk? At least in that way you're casting a wide net to be responsible to society at large. It's not that hard to not drive if you are drinking, and to whine about it is pretty lame.

The law also serves another purpose in that it gives people a good gauge if they can't gauge for themselves. Many times for most people, it's easy to say 'yeah I'm okay' but then you realize after walking around that perhaps you really are a bit drunk or at least buzzed. If you had used that time instead of drive around, perhaps something bad would have happened. By having a strict limit you can say to yourself 'okay no more than 1 drink or else I'm going to get in trouble' and you can pace yourself easier. Another way this helps is also for the aspect of peer pressure. If there were no laws, it'd be very easy for people to go out with friends, drive, and have a drink anyway because they'll 'probably' be okay. If they were afraid of the law they might say 'sorry man, I'm the DD tonight'. The law helps people be more responsible and it's not actually that hard to follow.

Finally, your examples of old people or 'bad drivers' is a moot point. Alcohol is something that can easily be tested and easily be enforced. Enforcing someone's 'bad driving' is not something that can easily be done past what we already do. Enforcing it for someone being 'old' likewise is already done in many places (here in Ontario, after a certain age you get tested every few years to ensure you are safe to drive). Enforcing how 'tired' someone is is pretty much impossible. Meanwhile alcohol by virtue of having a very easy way to test is enforced. If we knew that tens of thousands of more people out there would die every year if we took away drunk driving laws, it would be extremely irresponsible for us not to make the laws if it's so straighforward to get the message out and enforce.

Why even take the chance that you could hurt/main/kill yourself or another person? Why take the chance that you could lose your license? Why take the chance that even if you don't get hurt, you could do damage to your own property/car or someone elses?

So think about it. If you drink why drive? What are the cons about it? You don't get home to sleep in your own bed, who gives a fuck. Think of the bad shit that could happen if something does happen. Your parents get pissed about not getting home with the car? If your parents knew you were going to drink the wouldn't have let you use your car in the first place...

I think it's positive that you think driving while intoxicated is stupid. I agree with you. Losing a couple friends changed my attitude on driving after having a couple of drinks. Usually, I will call friends, cabs, or even sleep in my car. My friend made a mistake on a side road. That mistake could have cost both of us our lives. He learned from his mistake, to my knowledge, we have gone out since then and he won't take that chance ever again.

If someone I care about was killed by a driver that was barely over the legal limit and the accident seemed like something a sober person might have gotten into, I wouldn't change my stance. I can't really see changing my stance for anything, come to think of it. If someone did something idiotic with their car, and killed someone I cared about in the process, I would be equally furious at them regardless of their state of sobriety at the time, I just don't see how it makes a difference.

You don't have to agree with them, I don't have to agree with them, but they are like that because there are so many fucktards these days that get their drivers license when they hit 16 or 18 and think they're ontop of the world. i'm pretty sure 70 is elderly, isn't it? I guess it's personal opinion, but as soon as your old enough to get into places cheaper, i'd call you elderly. It's more of the fact that someone who drinks and drives chooses to lower there reaction time and put others at risk, than the fact that an elderly person may just be doing the best they can. I don't know how to explain it clearly, but i don't consider them one and the same.
