I'm writing a paper, and my google finesse is limited - can someone simply tell me how many people died to poverty in the last year (or in any year after 2000)?

i dunno, i'm always seeing those hippie commercials, that are like, "last year alone, over X americans died to poverty". i'm writing a paper on Malthusian economics (the thesis is basically we should get rid of welfare so poor people die instead of doing other things like suck welfare money and murder people), and so of course when i need just a quick stat, i can't find it. none of the hippie commercials/advertisements anywhere, and google brings up alot of sort-of related, but not, results.

I haven't found anything regarding actual death totals, but I did find references to two texts that studied mortality rates. I don't know if these will help as I can't access either from home right now, but if your school has permissions for accessing databases like JSTOR, you should be able to access the full documents.
Rogot E, Sorlie PD, Johnson NJ: Life expectancy by employment status, income and education in the National Longitudinal Mortality Study. Public Health Reports 1992;107:457-461.
John Mirowsky, Catherine E. Ross, Social Psychology Quarterly, Vol. 63, No. 2 (Jun., 2000), pp. 133-151.
Have you been using Google Scholar?

As to your question, it's tough to answer- no one dies 'to poverty.' A lack of money, in and of itself, won't kill you. Starvation will kill you, and that might or might not be due to poverty. Violent crime might kill you, and that may or may not be committed by an impoverished person and may or may not happen to you because you're impoverished. The studies TK points to are going to give you a roundabout view at best, and if you've seen political ads that say "X people died to poverty" they're probably engaging in misinformation or fudging facts.Originally posted by WardOK.. ur retarded case closed

its dumb to say that a lack of poverty didn't kill anyone , starvation kills,... because starvation doesn't kill. heart attacks kill, suffocation kills, the list of things that "actually" kill you is worthless especially if you want to argue at what point exactly one is dead. the best idea is to point the starting condition but then again you could say that 911 killed them when they lost their jobs and became impoverished. its just circular logic to argue symantx on this on.fffffffff_____

I specify poverty as 1) being poor and 2) dying from starvation/disease as a result of 3) being poor
and seriously, yes, i do know all this, but like you said, there are "roundabout" studies, and that's all i need. a concrete number, for the purposes of the paper it doesn't have to be realistic - I just have to have a source
