Diablo 2 isn't MMO in a modern sense. But it's very much one of the major pillars of what modern MMOs (and RPGs in general for that matter) are built on today.

I would say it's not an MMO because of the fact that it's room based, not town based. In Hellgate, like Guild Wars, you meet in towns or gathering areas, walking around, communicating, forming a party, then leaving out to adventure.

In Diablo 2 it was mainly you go onto a chat say "go dameon1:asdf".

Same thing in essence, and was probably the equivalent of that then. But today, no, not in the style of a modern MMORPG.

And don't you dare say "Since Diablo 2 isn't an MMORPG, then this isn't an MMORPG", because these are two very different games with common ground in the place they started ..... and demons. No getting around this, Hellgate: London is MMORPG, just cleverly disguised, to try to get people to pay more money into it.

If they had the balls to open up and say so, it woulda been better, instead of using crafty wording with the word "Free".

10, if you have friends/a guild to play with. Or enjoy playing with groups of random people met in towns/outposts.

You can do it solo, with AI companions, but it isn't the same. I played with Lunar Crescens, Cpt.Guano!, and Arilou for a while, and we had a blast. My guild was 50+ strong that I made in the beta which carried through to the retail.

What makes it so great is the mission structure. You do these missions that are heavily scripted to keep the action tense and fun. Instead of walking around a forest killing "Random Boar #14250694" looking for "100 Boar Hearts".

I gave my account to my cousin, actually, lol. I played the game for like two years before it came out, so when it went retail, I was still interested for a while, but then I just didn't have the time anymore. Work, school, etc. I'll probably be back for Guild Wars 2, though. I'll get a hookup from the staff to get my old characters transfered probably, if they still can.

Even the towns are instanced, I haven't seen more than 10 players in the same station as me.

You don't even form partys in the traditional sense. You flag yourself for autoparty, and then you run around and do whatever you feel like, and if someone enters the same area at roughly the same time, you'll be auto grouped. You don't need a spesific number or class setup.

You _can_ party in the WoW sense where you do like you said above, but I only did that with a RL friend in the Beta. Didn't see anyone else asking for this since auto-party is working so well.

You spend very little time of this game in stations (towns), that's why those of us that has played the beta does not consider it an MMORPG.

And no, I'm not going to bring out my tinfoil hat to protect me from evil money making conspirations.

I decided hellgate: london was not the game for me. So instead I went and downloaded a game called Archlord. Seems so incredibly similar to WoW - 8 hour instances that I had to try it out. Looks good so far.

After playing wow before the big update and level cap change, I determined that paying for a game monthly is a waste of money. I can cruise the net and find all sorts of mmorpgs that are very similar to WoW without the monthly fee. K that's my 2 cents.

If you're too cheap to pay for keeping cheaters, bugs and latency out of your game, then have fun. :sorcerer:

I'm not going to get into a discussion on how WoW is different from those games to make a point out of it.

I actually never played Diablo 2 online, but from what I've heard it was a huge mess with item duping and cheaters.

                          Update

Hellgate: London launch is happening right now.

US server is up, you can play with a beta account if you have one while waiting for the retail game.

EU server is still on hold.

Played about an hour of it so far. Not bad. Generic colour the numbers RPG fare but not bad. Graphics engine reminds me of Dead Rising.
