There's a huge difference in racism, and being unable to go into a store in your neighbourhood and get your orders right.

Does she need a break because she's foreign? Do ALL foreigners have to work 80 hours per week, and are piss poor? Do ALL foreigners have 12 kids?

      No, no and no.

Point is, she doesn't have to be different from the white chick working there the day after in the way that neither gives a fuck. Black, white or fucking golden. Doesn't matter. When you go into a resturant like McD, you should be able to expect a certain level of service.

Not to start a euro-usa bullshit thing, but i do find these sentences in this thread very, very comical:

        - I went to a mcd's after the gym today, and being the hungry health nut that I am, I ordered a number 7 (grilled chicken sandwich)

        - it pisses me off when people want to come to my fuckin country (..america, you know, the country based on immigrants; and the selfclaimed land of the free)

        - When you go into a resturant like McD, you should be able to expect a certain level of service (the combination of McD and restaurant/ service)

        - being the hungry health nut that I am [..cut..] So I got a number 7 with mayo and fries.

        Ok, back on track.
I think what you mean, Noah, is that there's a difference between people who try and people who don't? I totally believe that too. You can't blame a 6 month old immigrant for not speaking a language. It makes it even harder when your surroundings don't speak it either (work/ school/ tv/ neighbourhood) since you don't have to.. you can survive without.

Question (i dont know). Can you order in english in all chinatown stores/ parts in NYC or any other big city with alot of chinese?

I just don't see how anyone can pull the racism card, and go on about the hardships the person has to have because they are not native. Using stereotypes to defend a foreigner is equally stupid as using them as offense, just drop them all together, and look at shitty service as shitty service.

I say illegal immigrant because to immigrate legally there's certain tests you need to pass, and part of it is or should be being able to understand English well enough to take food orders at a restaurant. If they were in fact here legally my problem still remains and they should know the language better.

I'm just really sick of people pretending it's not ok to want someone working in the food business to get your orders right and say "NO THEY WORK 2 JOBS AND HAVE 12 KIDS!!!!!!!". How the fuck would they know? I'm somehow wrong for wanting my order taken correctly? Seriously, what the fuck?

I would continue this discussion, BUT.. you tried to call McD a restaurant..

And when I go to the McDonalds, where I go like two times a year, I do expect this level of service.. Most of the time I just go to a real restaurant when I want to eat, and otherwise I just stay hungry until I get home to make myself a real meal...

This mcd's was in a predominantly hispanic part of Arlington, where I live. She understood the "Number 7" part, but then I told her "no mayonaise." She gave me a wierd look and nodded... then proceded to scream to the other lady in the back in spanish. I'm not sure what she's saying, but it was too long for "number 7 no mayo."

Then I asked "Can you subsitute something for the fries?"
She looked confused. Shook her head and said "yes 2 with fries?"
I said "No number 7 no mayo, can I have something else besides fries like a fruit cup?"
she said "You want a fruit cup?"
I said "Yes can I have that instead of fries?"
She said "Yes number 7 with fries?"
I said "No I want something else besides fries."
She said "Yes you have fries."
                I said "I don't want fries."
She said "number 7 and fries?"
I said "Just give me a number 7."

So I got a number 7 with mayo and fries.

Shouldn't there be a english-speaking prerequisite or language check when someone is hired here? I mean... besides understanding "number 7" and "cheeseburger" she didn't understand a single word of anything else I said. I'm sure she's a perfectly nice lady... but I said NO MAYO. Fuck.

welcome to life in Arizona.....and btw she understood fries.

I still find this thread to be a bit comical. Unless you're from farm country where there are no other people who are not exactly like you, or live in a subrub where people have to drive to get to work at McDonalds, McDonalds isn't going to attract people with skills. Bluntly put, it's the lowest paid, least glamourous job that exists. Either you get a high school kid who spits in your food, or you get an immigrant who lacks skills to get any other job that pays any better.

Easy there, Chachi. I'd be considered to be from "farm country," and we've got our fair share of diversity here, too. I know you didn't mean it necessarily that way, but I'm just here to keep you honest.

Don't forget the elderly. I think it's horrid that some seniors have to work minimum wage jobs to get by. You work 45 years just to end up on the same (or lower) rung of society you started on...

It's just ironic to me that McDonald's had that whole series of commercials glamorizing their employees, showing that one chick with an accent playing soccer or whatever, but they don't even pay enough to attract people with enough "skill" to speak English. Likewise, they could train their employees to learn a little bit of English as well, it would be both a great service to their employees in addition to improving their customer service. It must be absolutely awful to work at McDonald's without being able to speak the language well, I'm sure these employees aren't thinking "fuck this country, I'm not speaking THEIR language" they just clearly don't have the means to learn English. It's bullshit for companies like McDonald's to advertise as if they are doing these people some great service by offering them such a crappy job, then throwing them into the fire in a situation where they need to know English without providing any training in the subject.
