someone probably once said something along the lines of "true intelligence is not being able to analyze and talk about complicated things but being able to simplify them to a form that everyone understands". I'm very fond of this idea and it just came to my mind once again as it so often does during my time reading these forums.

I wish I could contribute to this economical debate but I haven't the faintest clue as to how an economy works.

What I can and will say however is that there are two arguments here initially (in my opinion anyways):

1) Should the US allow non-English speakers to immigrate?

Illegal immigration put aside, I'm not sure what sort of demands the country has for people wishing to immigrate there, but should they be changed?

2) Should non-English speakers really be working in customer service in an English-speaking country? (like at McDonalds)

Contrary to some opinions here, the United States does not have a law that states that its 'official language' is English. I believe about half the states have done this though? Most of the time this is simply de facto, meaning that it is simply the way of things in practice but not spelled out by law. Some people underestimate the language diversity within the US and the growing influence of Spanish, and I believe it's finally time the US legislation intervened and gave official status to the most important languages in the country (probably a better idea to do it state-wise?, I don't know). It might simply be bad a idea for McDonalds to hire non-English speakers but they might not have any other options and hey, the law doesn't require them to speak English so there's nothing wrong there.

(yeah I checked and Virginia has English as its official language (according to wikipedia) but mostly my post is still sound so I'll leave it as it is)

Interesting point about that. During the early 1900s, they British Army noticed that levels of intellect mattered greatly in carrying out military orders. They noticed that while officers could understand senior officers and enlisted men could understand the lower officers, the enlisted men could not understand the higher officers. In that they decided that the optimal difference between ranks which were directing each other should be around 15 IQ points difference. Meaning that if the average soldier was 100 IQ, then the max that they could have leading them was something 115, and that person could have someone 130 leading them and so on.

Of course that was the turn of the century, so views about things have changed, but it's still interesting.

The point is not to dazzle the reader with sophisticated words and sentences but to explain a complicated matter in the most clear and simple way possible so that the reader understands it and the goal of the book or article is achieved. I realize you can't put everything in simple lay terms but in many cases there are many ways to achieve a higher level of simplicity.

Big words and long, confusing sentences in communication do no one any good, unless you're trying to impress someone smarter than you.

As Einstein once said, "If you can't explain something simply, you don't understand it". Although he was contending the with notion of quantum mechanics at the time.

However, sometimes those big words are the only way in which you can describe the often abstract and complex ideas in such debates. It's not meant to be confusing for the sake of being confusing. To communicate the idea of, for example, the effects of deregulation on a work force you need to use the correct jargon to convey the appropriate message.

I live in South Florida, knowing some spanish comes in handy. However, why do americans need to learn spainsh? With so many concessions being made to those who are coming into this country it sucks. My ancestors came over in much the same that others did to this country, yet they learned to speak the language. Street signs weren't made in Italian.


If any of you live in South Florida you know the problems we are having with so many illegals coming here. There are so many Hatians, Mexicans, and Guatamalins, working here and not paying taxes and getting free health care. I have no problem with people of other countries coming here looking for a better life. Except that when they come over here do it legally, pay taxes, and LEARN FUCKING ENGLISH

Shit woman, if you come to our country, working 40 hours in McDonalds and another 40 hours as cleaning lady, trying to raise your 4 kids while you had no education. i went to a panda express a couple years ago, and it was at this food court in woodbine in canada. i was going across the line saying what i wanted and didnt want, and this happened:
