If you managed in devising a model of the basic forces based on relative proportions between the interacting parts and nothing but those proportions, it might work. For all we know, we might be about doubling up in size every second and not be any the wiser.

i think you've got confused with algebra.
yes you do 2a +2b = 2c is the same as a+b=c
however
2(a^2) + 2(b^2)= 2(c^2) is not the same as (2a)^2 + (2b)^2
= (2c)^2
the latter is what you are doing if you are doubling everything in the universe the masses, distances etc as these are the factors the equations are based on.
how can you be doubling each individual equation when they are based on these values that you are doubling ? essentially you are disregarding the values then taking the equation as a whole and going

The argument is that you can hypothetically double everything in the universe and everything would stay the same. Atoms, gravities, etc. Everything would be doubled to scale. On the bare surface of things it might seem as if it might work, but it defies molecular mechanics, if everything did stay the same it would subvert properties of molecules, but then again, its a matter of whether the molecules actually double in size or double in number, if in numbers than i can see it being ok, but size no. The speed of light cannot be increased.
Consider this: when you spray water out of a hose it comes out at let's say 10 m/s. Now, if you were to run foward while spraying, your velocity would add to the speed at which the water comes out of the hose. Simple addition of velocities. Likewise, if you are running toward an arrow it will do more damage than if you are running away from it, or cars that get in a head-on collision have a greater impact then ones moving in the same direction at slightly different speeds. Okay, you get the idea.
When scientists began to study the speed of light they quickly came to one interesting discovery: the speed of light cannot be increased. If you run forward with a flashlight, the speed of light will remain constant, it will not increase as does any other physical body in motion. It's actuallt pretty weird if you think about it. if light were a particle it would increase in speed as do all other forms of matter. If it were a wave, it would also increase, as do sound waves, microwaves, etc.
To answer your question, if everything were increased in size, and the distances were also increased proportionally (including somehow all the non-linear forces which have already been pointed out) the speed of light would not increase, reducing the temperature of the universe. I don't know what would happen but it sounds bad.

Take 2-Hydrogen as an example. It has 1 proton, 1 neutron and 1 electron. Say you double the amount of protons. You then no longer have Hydrogen, but you get Helium. In this way Hydrogen will cease to exist when you double everything. Fatal consequences result from this.
I'm not sure if that is what you mean, but that's what I understood from it.
