    1. Has music evolved through the years?
    Yes

    2. Is music evolving positively?
It depends on how you look at it. It's significately different, but I don't know if you can really call it a positive or negitive change.

    3. Is the music scene effected by society?
I think so. I mean, some bands I think change their sound to what's "in" to become more liked and accepted.

    4. Is society effected by the music scene?
Yeah, just look at emo kids.

    5. Have we reached an end in the music evolution process with rap/hiphop?
rap/hiphop has always changed and I think always will. It doesn't even look like it's ending.

    6. Should we expect a blend of genres in the future?
I think there already is, somewhat... with punk with rap influence or hard rock with female vocalists and stuff like that.

    7. Do you expect any "dead" genres of music to be "revived"?
Cool Jazz is comin back. grunge punk's not dead.

    8. Is the evolution of music (speeding up, slowing down, staying the same) due to the advancements in music distribution, ie: downloading/youtube
I think that should be obvious. I mean, with more means to distribute and hear new bands and artists, it's rapidly speeding up. Without the internet, I wouldn't like 9/10ths of the bands I like now/own CDs of and what not.

    9. Are reality shows like American Idol (positively, negatively, not) affecting the music scene?
I don't see how it could negatively affect the music scene. The winners of these contests are obviously extremely talented and deserving. It really just gives someone with great music talent, who otherwise wouldn't be in the music scene, a chance to contribute to music.

edit: that messed up a bit, but fuck it

      1. It's changed that's for sure.

      2. I think over the past century, because of technological improvements, much more leisure time has opened up for people (even if not for everyone), and this is good for music because leisure is what allows good music to happen. And I don't think only new music has to be created for music as an art to be in a good state. People going back and raising old works and putting them into a modern context with their own recordings and performances I think is good too, and also represents evolution, even if a new work per se isn't created. Music's no good if no one is listening to it. So I think there's a "music hygiene" in a sense. The music hygiene is good, that is, music is in a good state, when people are listening to good music, even if new works per se aren't being created.

      3. Definitely.

      4. Definitely.

      5. I never seriously listened to hiphop (I understand rap to be a common technique of hiphop, but I guess other genres also use rap to some extent).

      6. I'm not sure.

      7. I think cultural preservation programs that modern states implement can revive many traditional forms that have more or less died under the gravitational influence (so to speak) of overarching cultures. So I would expect at least some "dead" genres to be revived. Anything else I'm not really sure of.

      8. In one sense, yes: The new distribution systems let people get what they are looking for that much quicker, easier, and cheaper. This enables evolution because it gets more people into the music that interests them so that they in turn can contribute which causes evolution. In another sense, not really, because I believe evolution to be relative in a sense. When one might think that music is evolving slowly, one needs only change their scope and see how significant the "little" changes that occured were, and see how truly big they were for the time. Regardless of that, because, as I mentioned before, more people are into music, more is happening and so more is evolving; but that doesn't speak to the technological aspects.

      9. I'm not sure. From my minor impressions of American Idol there is not really anything serious going on there musically, so in my humble opinion they are in one sense affecting it badly because it seems they could do better; in another sense, they not affecting it at all because what they do doesn't hurt the real contributions made by others.

These are close-ended questions. I appreciate the long answers and all, but I'd like to hear yes/no answers, too. I'll have a questionnaire soon with open-ended questions where you can elaborate. Just don't want people to be scared off thinking they need to leave paragraphs.

                1) quite clearly it has

                2) sometimes yes sometimes no , but whether you find music good or bad is subjective anyway

                3) yes

                4) yes music is created and used for different purposes, be it government propaganda or songs of freedom

                5) i don't know that much about rap/hip hop

                6) among other things yes

                7) then they wouldn't be dead

                8) music is easier to obtain than ever before, conversely i'd also say that we've seen more creation of completely manufactured bands created by the music companies and reality t.v. purely aimed at making money and non creative but doing covers etc contributing little to musical history other than a footnote in crash marketing.

I believe that marketing companies are playing it safer than in say the 1970's and thusly talking less risks in what they back. However the internet means anyone can release music with a modest budget - getting a fan base without commercial backing is incredibly hard though and to influence music you need to be heard.

i refuse to draw a conclusion

                9) as soon as music could be put on vinyl and sold it became a commodity to be exploited. Shows like this are a cynical end product of this. People like them though and they rely on a public vote (or cash cow) so they contribute to the music scene in a positive way for them. For me i'd rather something different

                  1. Has music evolved through the years? Definitely. You can see a general progression of genre X influenced new genre Y which influenced new genre Z.

                  2. Is music evolving positively? Living in the now, it's hard to tell. Based on the 90's to today I'd say it's evolved in both positive and negative ways. But the positive seems to outweigh the negative.

                  3. Is the music scene effected by society? Always. Different genres and bands can be effected by what causes they join that are prevalent in our society.

                  4. Is society effected by the music scene? Yeah, a new band can create a new trend in fashion or lifestyle for the next few weeks to years.

                  5. Have we reached an end in the music evolution process with rap/hiphop? Obviously not.

                  6. Should we expect a blend of genres in the future? We have a blend of genres now, so definitely in the future as well.

                  7. Do you expect any "dead" genres of music to be "revived"? Disco 2010 ... ie: never.

                  8. Is the evolution of music (speeding up, slowing down, staying the same) due to the advancements in music distribution, ie: downloading/youtube? Definitely, since you can get your voice out there easier and cheaper than ever.

                  9. Are reality shows like American Idol (positively, negatively, not) affecting the music scene? Negatively. It makes no talent bums think they can all sing when they obviously can't and it floods the market with manufactured, poppy bullshit.

                        1. Has music evolved through the years?
No, there has been enhancing technologies, but it's basically still the same.

                        2. Is music evolving positively?
I can't answer both question 1 and 2. Who made this survey? This is bias, leading questions.

                        3. Is the music scene effected by society?
                        Yes, and reciprocally.

                        4. Is society effected by the music scene?
Oh.. I just said that. You didn't ask me why though, and I am a lazy respondent

                        5. Have we reached an end in the music evolution process with rap/hiphop?
You are wasting my time, there is no evolution? There have been many 'new' styles after rap, rap is from the eightees. Even though they probably had rap way before that too. But recordings only go two centuries back

                        6. Should we expect a blend of genres in the future?
Like it always does? Mashups? Hip Hop goes Classic etcetera?

                        7. Do you expect any "dead" genres of music to be "revived"?
I was going to say country, but Dolly Parton still has concerts in stadiums, so I don't think it's dead. My next option would be classical, but that never died either.

                        8. Is the evolution of music (speeding up, slowing down, staying the same) due to the advancements in music distribution, ie: downloading/youtube
No, because that only affects the quantity. I think in the end you will only share your most brilliant ideas with a few people close to you and only real new styles come from that cooperation.

                        9. Are reality shows like American Idol (positively, negatively, not) affecting the music scene?
What do you mean with scene? People are making money from it, so I guess that's positive (if they are the scene).
                        Thanks.

                            1. Has music evolved through the years?
Yes, you can also see an pretty strong correlation between advancements in technology and the evolution in music/making or instruments.

                            2. Is music evolving positively?
Who's to say if it's positive or negative? It's clearly subjective. There are certain scenes of music which I think are flourishing (ie: Canadian independent music scene), but there are other genres which I think are stagnant or diminishing.

                            3. Is the music scene effected by society?
                            Yes, to an extent.

                            4. Is society effected by the music scene?
Yes, to an extent, both of these questions seem to depend on the goal of what the artist wishes to portray in their artistry.

                            5. Have we reached an end in the music evolution process with rap/hiphop?
Can you ever reach an end in art? I don't think there is ever an end, someone will find a way to reinvent it.

                            6. Should we expect a blend of genres in the future?
                            Of course.

                            7. Do you expect any "dead" genres of music to be "revived"?
Nothing really dies, I think because there will always be listeners to something. "dead" music can probably be blended into different genres in the future

                            8. Is the evolution of music (speeding up, slowing down, staying the same) due to the advancements in music distribution, ie: downloading/youtube
I'm not sure what you mean. The evolving of a music genre, or just the distribution of music? For distribution, it is definitely speeding up, as it is too simple now to get your art out there for people to listen to. Evolving? it is probably speeding up faster than before but not greatly, mainly because since creating music is so much easier and cheaper than before, I think more artists are willing to take risks to try something different. Not all of them will, which is why it's a slow evolution.

                            9. Are reality shows like American Idol (positively, negatively, not) affecting the music scene?
Shows like American Idol are negatively affecting the music scene. Shows like that strive for "perfection", but music is not always perfect. I think that is mostly the problem with our culture though, that you WILL be punished if you do something "wrong". It creates cookie-cutter images of what we should become, and only few dare to to be "imperfect". There's nothing wrong with creating something that is not beautiful, it's what you as an artist want to create.
But then I guess American Idol could be a positive in that it may invoke other artists to strive for something that American Idol misses; a personal connection with their art.

                              1. Has music evolved through the years?Any change would be considered evolving...so of course it has!

                              2. Is music evolving positively? Depends on what category of music you are listening to, jazz, rock, heavy metal, bluegrass, country, classical? To vague a question, but overall...I would say yes to some and maybe no to others!

                              3. Is the music scene effected by society? social economic factors will play a part in most styles of music, especially the Blues & Jazz

                              4. Is society effected by the music scene? On what level? exposure? Not to any level that would effect my daily life, so I would say not really, but perhaps to some it can.

                              5. Have we reached an end in the music evolution process with rap/hiphop? Did we reach the end of the music evolution in regards to Punk? from what I grew up with and the fact that Punk started back then, most people in the ages of say 15 - 21 that say they listen to punk comes nowhere close to what Punk actually was. Perhaps it just evolves further past what it originally was, and in noting that, rap/hip hop will do the same as all music such as jazz, reggae, blues, country....

                              6. Should we expect a blend of genres in the future? obviously so, as it has been happening that way for decades already.

                              7. Do you expect any "dead" genres of music to be "revived"? We had swing revival in the late 90's early 2000's. So....Most likely yes!

                              8. Is the evolution of music (speeding up, slowing down, staying the same) due to the advancements in music distribution, ie: downloading/youtube
The record industry is still bent on marketing to 10 - 15 year old girls and boys, so look for more crap and less in the actual musician dept. Pop will be a joke, but you can't market a classically trained horn player, violinist or jazz musician as the industry can do with winners from American Idol. There will always be a market for those that enjoy music and not a marketed Hanna Montana scam. So I would say it will slow down to companies like Polygram , WB, Capital and so on. Small labels and independent releases will be what keeps the real musicians alive...that and touring to play live for people.

                              9. Are reality shows like American Idol (positively, negatively, not) affecting the music scene?
They are pure crap and hold nothing to what I consider the music scene. It would be nice if they could actually play an instrument. My American Idol would not be any of these idiots on TV, but rather the likes of Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Max Roach, Bill Monroe, Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughan. Idol is a marketing scam of crap, not musicians.

Maybe they need a show called Jazz Idol or Classical Idol to see real talent by real musicians and not some tart singing someone elses musics written for her.
May your shit come to life and kiss you on the face.
